What draws Iago and Emilia together? Did they marry for love? At one point in their relationship Emilia and Iago had to be in love. Love is what attracts two people together. Love, and the fact that they have similar interests. Perhaps Iago and Emilia got together because of their similar temperaments. Both Iago and Emilia are very practical people. They see things for what they are, not for what they are envisioned to be. Sometimes, this realistic attitude gives them a cynical appearance. For example, while Emilia may have merely been observing the nature of men |They are stomachs and we are food….X her attitude comes off as one that is tired and vengeful. Yet, why does this line have a negative tone? Emilia too, is a very practical woman, she realizes the worth in some items and holds them high in her morals. |In troth, I think I should; and undo+t when I had done it [make her husband a cuckold]. While neither one seems to be unhappy in the coupling, neither one seems to be ecstatic either. The two of them have a mutual understanding that a marriage is composed of taking and giving. While each individual is greedy and in the marriage solely for the access to personal desires, the other is too busy concentrating on their own wants to even notice. Both Iago and Desdemona could be using the marriage to get close to Othello; Desdemona for her own pleasurable reasons, Iago for malicious ones. Staying together, on the other hand, is what makes Iago and Emilia+s relationship different. People stay together with others that they feel need them. Belonging is an aspect of human nature. However, I do not feel that Iago and Emilia feel secure in this relationship, this is not why they stay together. Iago has a malleable character. He is abrupt with his wife, consoling to Othello and as Shakespeare insinuates, honest with his audience. Perhaps Iago is so changeable and wise because of his prior experience. The play implies that Iago, too, was once in Othello+s shoes. Iago has earned his intelligence through experience, and thus knows exactly how to torture human nature.
