Outcry of people from Triplicane – A note from T.A.Sampathkumar, President, Srinivas Youngmens Association, Triplicane
The civic conditions in Triplicane have gone from good to bad to worse. The tolerance of the people have gone from worse to bad to good. People have accepted the sub-optimal civic conditions as the way of life, thinking that it is just next to impossible for them to make a difference. There used to be a saying that if you are living in Triplicane you are the most blessed but that remains a myth and if you live in Triplicane today you are the most cursed one.
Take any problem – Traffic ? With the increasing volume of traffic thanks to approved and unapproved flats and the number of visitors increasing by the day, given the most famous Parthasarathy Swamy Temple and Marina beach located here and with the increasing number of business establishments/shops across every streets, there are too many vehicles that gets parked on either sides of the road (some action has happened recently to earmark parking places on one side of the road on some of the important roads), least caring for the flowing traffic and traffic discipline, even the best effort from the traffic police department would be hardly sufficient to address the issue.
Civic conditions – As long as people continue to spit and use the roads as public conveniences, any amount of effort from the Corporations will be an exercise in futile. However, there has hardly been any effort from the Corporation either to clean all the bins on a regular basis. May be, the bins are not sufficient why the bins overflow but it reflects very poorly on us especially when visitors come from abroad. To add to the problem is the market place and vendors there who find it convenient to use the centre of the road as the vegetable waste disposal point, so that the cattles don’t disturb their business. But, for the cattle owners it is such a free ride of providing the basic food for their cattle so they just let them off free to have their meal, does not matter how much they bother the people, especially elders and the children who walk on the road and the traffic. All of these continue to happen, even Corporation Officials adjust and go, the traffic police use the same road, they adjust and go, leave alone the public, who does not have a choice.
ROADS PLANNING Roads are skeleton of any town plan, or, to vary the simile, the arteries of the organisms through which the life blood of communication flows. The planner must necessary let the road engineer have the last word regarding road material, gradient camber, super elevation, radii of horizontal and vertical curves, etc through he should be well aware of the technical factors governing ...
Despite all odds the Government agencies and the social service organisations in the area are doing their bit to help improve the conditions, however, unless the basic attitude of the people change where they demand for better amenities instead of sulking and compromising on basic needs and by themselves become role models instead of being selfish, which most of them are today, elections will come and go, new representatives will come and go, the situation would never change.
It should start with self discipline and then the realisation about the fact that you don’t need to compromise because it is your right to demand basic civic conditions. The Government authorities should work on the problem more seriously than they do today, use an iron hand to stop the menace in every discipline.
Some suggestions are — earmark a wider area probably a covered one for keeping the dust bins, increase the number of dust bins keeping the flow in mind as these are used even by vendors, organise for picking up the vegetable wastages and have a common point where these could be disposed off, cattle owners should be asked to send their cattles to these common points, which should be a covered area and probably a little away from the residential locality or get the cattle owners to pick up the wastage and go to their own places. Regular and more frequent pickup of dustbins should be organised. Parking should be allowed only on one side of the road and there should be stern action for violators. Cattles should not be allowed free run on roads. Punish people who misuse the public roads, to create fear.
Rules of the road and driving etiquette are the general practices and procedures that road users are required to follow. These rules usually apply to all road users, though they are of special importance to motorists and cyclists. These rules govern interactions between vehicles and with pedestrians. Directionality Traffic going in opposite directions should be separated in such a way that they do ...
