This gives credibility and reliability to Sessin’s research however his research was a field study therefore extraneous variables could not be controlled, this study could also not be repeated as the conditioning would change each time due to environmental factors. But this study is high in ecological validity and internal validity as it met its aims in investigating GH release during SWS.
Kruger et al (1985) found that lack of SWS has also been associated with reduced functioning of the immune system; antibodies are regenerated during cell growth and protein synthesis, this also adds reliability to the restoration theory of sleep. During REM sleep our brain grows, Siegel (2003) showed that brain growth the amount of REM sleep in any species is proportional to the immaturity of the offspring at birth for example the baby platypus is immature at birth and has about eight hours of REM sleep per day, whereas the dolphin which can swim from birth has almost no REM sleep.

This research suggests that there is a relationship between neural development and REM sleep, however this study has been criticised as it is an animal study therefore it cannot be representative of humans, also dolphins are uni-lateral which means they sleep one hemisphere of the brain at a time this is substantially different to human sleep. Siegel and Rogawski (1988) suggested that REM sleep allows for a break in neurotransmitter release which in turn permits neurons to regain their sensitivity and allow the body to function properly.
Support from this study comes from the action of antidepressant drugs such as MAOIs; these drugs increase neurotransmitter levels in dopamine and serotonin. This gives the Study empirical support as it has scientific proof this coincides with the biological approach which states all behaviour is biological and chemical and can therefore be inherited through genes , however this does not take into account individual differences as no one person is the same therefore they may have a different experience.
Crick and Mitchison (1983) proposed that during REM sleep unwanted memories are discarded thus making more important memories accessible. SWS increased in particular which fits the view that NREM sleep appears to be more associated with physical recovery therefore when we lack sleep we also lack recovery this means that our body will need to sleep in SWS for longer to make up for restoration time. However research from Horne and Minard (1985) does not support this view as their research showed that doing exhausting exercises makes you fall asleep faster but not for longer.
