P2 DB 2 – major topics linking certain historical events One of the biggest Napoleons mistakes is the fact that used to appoint his numerous brothers to be the kings of occupied countries. Most of them did not have a statements talent, which resulted in situation when the level of political corruption, in occupied territories, was on the continuous rise. In its turn, this was undermining French war effort, because Napoleon needed to send more and more troops to deal with rebellions in his rear. Napoleon failed to recognize the importance of scientific progress. When being approached by the inventor of steamship Robert Fulton, who offered him to deploy his invention in French navy, Napoleon dismissed the concept of boat being powered by steam as utterly absurd. This contributed to French navy losing the battle of Trafalgar. In its turn, this meant that continental blockade of Britain, would not have a full effect, because British fleet was still ruling the waves. In 1803, Napoleon had sold Louisiana to United States, which meant that, from that time on, France could not confront British geopolitical interests in North America, because it deprived France of its naval bases in the New World.
Napoleon failed to recognize the importance of having a strong fleet in contemporary warfare, which resulted in bringing about his ultimate demise. Napoleon considered himself a military genius, this is why he never listened to the advices of his generals. It served him well, at the beginning; however, as war progressed, French army began to loose a strategic advantage, because Napoleons generals lacked tactical flexibility in making decisions. Napoleon strived to get down to the smallest details of every military operation. This resulted in situation when his generals were afraid of assuming any kind of responsibility. Finally, Napoleon thought of his soldiers as mere canon meat, which was the main reason why he always had a problem getting men drafted into the army. It was very common, among Frenchmen at the time, to cripple themselves, in order to be declared as unfit for military service.
