Prehistoric paintings were often descriptive of an important event or story though, it is also said that many cave dwellers used paintings as decorations. Unlike today painters of early civilizations and cave dwellers had to manufacture their own paint by grinding colored materials such as plants and clay into powder and then adding water. In ancient society the art of paint-making and painting was often taken to the grave by the master. In Europe some such cave paintings have been found that date back over 50, 000 years. These paintings are defined more by shape than color. It was not until the Egyptians came along that a larger variety of colors were established for painting.
The Egyptians imported indigo and madder plants from India to make these additional colors. The Romans also learned the skills of making paint from the Egyptians. After the collapse of the Roman and Egyptian empires the art of paint making was lost for some time until the English began making paints near the end of the middle ages. In today’s Western society any one can become a painter in a matter of minutes just by going to their local Wal-mart and picking up a set of water colors, unlike the Ancient cultures of the past.
Western Civilized painters of today have evolved there work into a variety of painting styles. Such styles as abstract paintings, folk art and landscape scenes can be produced with ease in today’s Western World. The painters of today’s Western society have a wide variety of materials such as oil paints, acrylics, pastels and canvases at their disposal, unlike earlier civilizations. In conclusion, the Western culture has established itself with a marvelous array of unique artists and painters. These painters paint for many different reasons, whether it is for expression, advertisement, or just plain fun.
