Participants- I decided to choose an opportunity sample to pick my participants for this study. The best way to avoid bias in sampling is to take a simple random sample from the target population. Opportunity samples are best Materials- I had two chairs, one for the ‘participant’ and one for the ‘looker.’ It was set in the common room in a quiet corner at an off peak time, so there weren’t many other students disturbing the participants to cause any bias or extraneous variables. I also had a stopwatch to time for the ten second intervals when I stared or not at the participant. Procedure- First and foremost, all six participants were debriefed for this study. I feel that standardized guidelines is very important in any psychological investigations being carried out, if there isn’t, then that could lead to various problems.
For example, participants may be deceived in a way by not being appropriately debriefed. The participants were kept in a separate room used as a ‘waiting room’, then individually called forward to take a seat in the common room. While the participant was settled and ready to commence, the experimenter began by a double knock on the table. After each male and female participant was completed, the experimenter recorded the results down on a previously prepared sheet of paper.
Each participant got five goes each, resulting to thirty scores altogether (five lots of guesses from six participants).
