Sport and physical activity is a major thing in the lives of many people in Australia. The people in Australia intend to spend more of their time on leisure than their work.
Involvement in sports or physical activity mainly depends on two factors. The two factors are personal factors and socio cultural factors.
Personal factors are those that factors that are unique to a particular person and directly affect that person’s regular capacity to be involved in sport and physical activity.
The socio cultural factors that may influence participation in sport and physical activity are shown below:
I have started my schooling in Kuwait and finished my primary schooling in Adelaide, Australia. So I had many different types of influences and encouragement from my friends and family depending on where I lived.
During my primary schooling in Kuwait I was involved in many sports and physical activities. In school I used to play badminton and basketball during my physical education lesson. I always had interest in cricket as I have been brought around the culture of my parents and friends who always loved to watch cricket and also play cricket for fun.
The Essay on Sports Activities at School
Introduction The aim of this report is to analyse why so many students aren’t motivated to do a lot of sports activities at school. A number of students and teachers were interviewed and their suggestions for changes to the methods are summarised. The problem * There aren’t a lot of different sport activities offered at school There don’t seem to be a lot of sports that can be played at school. ...
Outside school we had a very big social group of Indians. And in this social group they used to organise physical activities and events for children. Whenever there events I always used to be involved in running races, sack relay and many other events that they used to conduct 6 years ago in 2004 and before. In Kuwait there was very hot and long summer. So this meant that everyone mainly stayed inside and very much involved in indoor activities.
We came to Adelaide, Australia in February 2005; in the beginning I didn’t know anyone at school so I wasn’t very active in sport. I just used to participate in the school during PE lessons. But after a few weeks I was involved in playing in sports for school. The sport I played for the school was soccer. This allowed me to be more active in sport and be involved in physical activity. I became more active mainly in sport because I used to play soccer every weekend and sometimes after school.
This is pretty much all the involvement that I had in physical activity and sport.
The other factors that may affect people’s involvement in sport are social, cultural, political and legal, environmental, economic and historical.
Social factors The social factors that may influence an individual to participate in physical activity and sport are: values of the community that they live in, pursue and interests of the family, types of sports offered by the school and organisations in the community, the role of mass media, the acceptability of various behaviours by peers and family and peer pressure.
Cultural factors The cultural background of a person maybe be the most significant influence on the individual depending on the type of sport and physical activity they participate in.
Political factors The Workplace Health and safety issues and public liability insurance have had major influences on sport and physical activity. The sports have suffered great increases in premiums than the average of increases in all other industries.
Environmental factors These include accessible, safe, and appealing recreational areas, also developing to meet the various needs of the children, young people, families, older people and retirees.
Economic factors Includes the cost of the equipment, the cost of admission, level of access to health products and services.

In a summary of findings by Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), they had very interesting findings in relation to participation in sports and physical recreation in Australia during 2005-2006.
Around 66% of Australians over the age of 15 had participated in sports at least once during the year.
Almost 29% of the Australia’s population aged 15 years and over participated in sports and physical recreation activities twice per week.
It was 54% of Australia who was participated in non organised activities while 28% participated in organised sports/activities.
The most common reported activity for male and females was walking
REGULARITY OF PARTICIPATION BY AGE – 2005-06
This graph shows that in 2005-2006 the age group of 25-34 had the most participation in sports and physical activity. After the age of 35-44 the involvement in physical activity and sports starts to decline at a slow rate for total participation.
The survey conducted by the ABS in 2003 reported that the rate of participation in sport of people born outside Australia was significantly lower than that of people born in Australia. The rate of participation was particularly low for people from countries where languages other than English are spoken.
Attendance rates of people from LOTE backgrounds was 29.1%, people from English speaking countries was 46.4% and people born in Australia 53%.
The level of participation in sports varies with the age and type of sports
The rate of participation in sport and physical activity was slightly higher in capital cities compared to other areas of Australia.
Generally, participation rates increased with the level of education. Highest rates were for students in secondary schooling.
From this data that I have collected i can make many assumptions about my involvement in physical activity and sports. After I reach the age of 35 i would possibly not be involved in any type of sports, I would just be mainly involved in physical exercise like walking. Maybe sometimes I might play sports with my kids and friends but not as the professional way that I played in my senior school years. After the age of 50 I would probably be just doing walking or yoga.
