Essay – rough draft 1st paragraph: When Patch Adams arrived at the mental hospital seeking help, he was confused, disoriented, and lacked a sense of purpose. He felt lost, and felt that he did not have an identity. The longer he remained the hospital, the more exposed he became to other people’s difficulties. The patients at the mental hospital helped to broaden Patch’s perspective on life. One specific patient, Arthur Mendelssohn, was instrumental in doing that. Arthur challenged Patch’s perspectives and beliefs, which eventually made him more open-minded.
His new open-mindedness helped him to discover his gift and desire to help others, and eventually led him to pursue medical school so that he could become a doctor. Through these experiences, Patch discovered that he could use humour to help ease their suffering. He used his unique gifts, talents, and personality in his future career as a doctor. 2nd paragraph: As Patch followed his renewed sense of purpose, he enrolled in medical school with the ambition of becoming a doctor.
While in medical school, Patch encountered a variety of difficulties. One difficulty he had revolved around a roommate that was jealous and accused him of cheating. He also met a girl he liked who did not like him back. During the time she thought he was an idiot. She judged him and did not think that he was an honourable person. He did not get along well with his professor either, and was also despised by one of his patients who was named Bill. His uptight roommate Mitch as well as the staff and faculty of his school.

Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Cairn . Tragedy strikes, and Adams’ career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch receives bad news that Cairin is going to die from his best friend Rudy. When Patch received the message that Cairin was dying of cancer he became mad and he started to throw things around the hospital. Patch started to cry.
Patch thought about closing down the hospital because Cairin wasn’t going to be able to support him the way he thought she was going to be able to. Afterwards Patch called Cairin asking her if it was really true that she was going to die from cancer. Cairin is anxious to tell Patch that she is dying of cancer so she lies and says it is not true.
