Each essay had its own main point and some shared main points.
The first essay, which was about a mother during her pregnancies, suggests that closure of the movie made labor of the second pregnancy easier. Where as in the first labor where she only saw a portion of the movie and had troubles during labor. In the second essay it focuses a lot on the irony because in the beginning he calls the other womans kids clumsy then his daughter trips down the stairs. He also shows that your life could change in a couple of seconds. Because if his daughter would have fallen through the window a lot in his life would changed. The third essay also shows how your life could change in couple of seconds because after he found out that Ralph had died, he began to think that could have been him.
In the fourth essay his main point is that you should be good to other people because you never know when you might meet them down the road again, just like how the Belgium man meets the German man and now they are best friends. The fifth essay is about how one day he finally gets the opportunity to meet his hero and because he was unprepared he didnt have proof that had ever meet him. After that day he always carried around a pencil and that made him who he is today. The texts purpose is to convince the reader that you should write down all the incidents in you life. You never know when you may want to look back on your life. Paul Auster uses his personal experience and personal accounts from his friends to write all of the essays.

The author shows that when you write about your experiences in life you may start to analyze and reflect on what you have gone through. Like he says that when he found out that Ralph had died he didnt even think that that could have been him. If you really get detailed about it you may spur something you have forgotten about in the past. This essay really makes you think about how easy your life can change through a couple of events or in just a couple of seconds.
It makes you want to write down all the events in your life just to one day youll be able to look back on them.
