In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birthmark,” with perfections comes death. Imperfection is always a downfall. Everyone tries to be perfect when, in reality, no one can be perfect. Everyone tries to be perfect and usually when we try to be perfect, we end up making things worse. It does not matter if we think we have something perfect it will not last for long because as humans we are not perfect. As in the story Aylmer tries to make Georgiana perfect and once he has made her perfect, in his eyes’, she dies.
This story ultimately comes down to God’s creation of nature and people. People have differences. Man is created by God and man tries to create perfection. In this story the perfection is created through science. “Georgiana has it never occurred to you that the mark upon your check might be removed” (p. 119).
Aylmer, being the great scientist / perfectionist he is thinks that Georgiana is ugly with the mark upon her face so he wants to remove the mark to make her perfect. Shap pelle 2 God and nature play a good role in the story, were man and science play the evil role in the story. God creates woman which create babies, then the evil steps in, abortion, which equal’s death. God created nature with nature comes animals, then the evil steps in, cloning, which equal more animals that were not intended to be.
The Essay on Mad Gods Nature Men Seven
Symbolism allows writers to suggest their ideas within a piece of literature. This is found in most types of writing. Stephen Crane expresses this in his short story, The Open Boat. Through symbolism and allegory, it is demonstrated that humans live in a universe that is unconcerned with them. The characters in the story come face to face with this indifference and are nearly overcome by Nature's ...
With both of these examples of abortion and cloning they reflect on Aylmer’s attempted perfection on Georgiana. Man is playing the role of God by altering life. “Unless all my science has deceived me it cannot fail” (p. 129).
Aylmer said this in my opinion that he is perfect, God, and his work is wholesome. No one is perfect and when someone tries to be perfect and play the role of God they are only creating bad.
When you try to create a perfect thing and your not God it must not exist, as in the story Georgiana dies once the birthmark was removed from her face, which made her perfect.
