Choosing the Right Mentor In determining which mentor can provide the unique and defining experience during practice, I must be aware of his/her qualifications of practice. This includes her educational background and competencies in handling educational goals and objectives. Since my target position at the moment is that of an assistant principal, I wish to learn and acquire information from an assistant principal. This is because they are more attached and inclined towards administering and monitoring programs.
Moreover, such position is more tuned to the student population and can effectively serve the bridge between upper administrators & educators and parents and students. This can give me an authentic experience because I can decipher what important values and credentials are important for this task to be facilitated efficiently. Objectives and Goals Deciding what is most important in the position, I must be able to get adequate information from my mentor on relevant topics and tasks associated in the practice.
Given this, I must now be observant of what issues need to be addressed by the assistant principal and what program and methods may be effective in a particular situation. Similarly, there is a need for me to communicate with my mentor concerning my goals and objectives and how it can help consolidate to her current position. I must be able to decipher important leadership traits and synchronize mine with the nature of the work so as to foster professional growth.
Refer to Index 1 for checklist. Information and Documentation Properly documenting interaction and responsibilities is a good strategy for me to learn in the process of this program. I must be able to determine important traits and ideas coming from my mentor so as to help redefine my skills and put it into his/her position. Likewise, I must also participate in the everyday routines of my chosen assistant principal to help me comprehend the level of difficulty balancing out the tasks given.
In addition, documentation is an important criterion in determining the level of competency and leadership I have in addressing the issues given or delegated to me. By doing this, not only can I create a good reflection of the experience, I can necessitate my own programs and models based from the information and observation. Feedback The element of feedback is also important in creating a viewpoint of my mentor and peers whether or not I was able to address my goals and objectives in the program.

By creating such system, I can be sure that my actions and tasks are in-line with the current responsibilities and help cultivate my professional career. With this, I wish to create a feedback plan for the preliminary and duration of the program. It shall include a checklist that will effectively rate the individuals’ skills and capabilities in handling activities and tasks assigned. Moreover, there shall be a written portion wherein the mentor can add comments and insights concerning my contributions and effectiveness in the position.
Personal Response/Reflection During this experience, it has been my aim to learn and develop skills and competencies as quickly as I can. I wish to enhance and explore my capabilities by undergoing tasks and responsibilities that are assigned to me. Moreover, given the time constraint under my mentor, I seek to drop my objectives of creating a good and sustainable program because it would take months and years for this process to be completed.
Likewise, it would be burdensome on my part because I had to consider the facets of monitoring and constantly communicating with concerned parties in the issue. Though this may be the case, I am positive and optimistic that my agenda’s can be achieved. I had chosen a good mentor that will teach and guide me the proper values and ideals in my chosen professional career. With these, I can sufficiently equip myself with these tenets and become a competent and competitive assistant principal someday. It is a reality that can only be achieved by constant hard work and determination.
