This paper will provide information regarding the personal interview with Mrs. S. B, a social worker who works in one of the long-term care facilities in Ca. She has been working with the company for almost ten years now. She has an associate’s degree in Human Services, which she earned from a community college. At present, she works as one of the department heads in charge of the social services department.
What type of agency do you work for?
Mrs. S B works in one of the long-term care facilities located in , Ca. She is one of the department heads that run the social services department. The facility she works at has a total of 299 beds and houses mostly the elderly. It is divided into three stations. Stations one and two are the SNF (skilled nursing facility) stations and station three is the sub-acute station. Residents who are ambulatory, mobile, or need short-term or long-term care, go to station one or two. Residents who are on a ventilator or have tracheostomy go to station three. As mentioned earlier, most of the residents are elderly but they also have younger residents, most of whom reside in station three.
What do you consider to be the main focus of your job (such as case management, advocacy, counseling, or problem solving) Mrs. Sai works with all the residents in the facility as well as their families. Her main duties and responsibilities are counseling and advocating for the residents and their families, and aiding with whatever they may need. She works as a residential counselor, client and family advocate and gerontology aide.

What does a typical day of work look like? Please describe. Mrs. Sai check-in the new patient who just arrived from the hospital, checks the chart and calls the family when needed. She is the one who schedules appointments as well and set ups access rides for their doctor’s appointment. Mrs. Sai also makes referrals for mental health services or to a homecare agency and coordinate discharge planning. When patients go home from a nursing home, they may need a variety of services in the home, such as physical therapy, home health care or housekeeping services or caregivers who can accompany him or her overnight or hourly.
What motivates you to remain involved in human services?
“The people who need help, my family and my colleagues who make work so comfortable and less tiring and also my patients in the facility knowing that I can make their transition of life easier at this stage of their lives needs someone to organize things for them to recuperate and get back to their usual living are the ones who motivate me to remain involved in human Services”. Extending help is a very rewarding feeling for me and keeps me motivated to be hands on in the area of human services.
What obstacles and controversial issues do you face in your human services work? One of the controversial issues that Mrs. Sai face is when the family tries to get involved or tries to make changes with the clients advance directive or the living will. For example, accepting or refusing medical care for their parent, organ and tissue donation, DNR or DNI orders. It’s a big challenge to explain and elaborate each itemized issues mentioned on these between the patient and family to help them to come up with an acceptable and realistic decisions. Another issue that Mrs. Sai face is when an individual tries to manipulate the system in getting what she wants and use it for her own personal desire and not due to medical condition, for example medical supplies, medication, wheel chair, improper use of disability parking card, etc. It is also a challenge for my professionalism ethics and respecting their choices and still going along with their personal intention.

What do you like and dislike about your human service role? “Doing my job well makes me feel important because I know I am able to make difference in the life of others”. Mrs. Sai loves to help people especially the ones who are really in need. She admits that she doesn’t get a good paycheck and work is tiring but helping is her passion, she said that at the end of the day when she thinks about the people she helped, she said it’s a very rewarding feeling.
