Personal Response to Stephen Barkers Essay on Improving Your Thinking After reading Stephen Barkers essay Improving Your Thinking, I have discovered new ways on how to improve thinking. As we pause to reflect critically on our behaviors and actions, we can analyze the logic of our thinking, explore alternative ways of viewing what we have assumed to be true, use our creative imagination, and discover reasons for why things are the way they are. The effectiveness of ideology critique emerges when our previously assumed normal practices of thinking are revealed to be part of socially constructed realities that serve a hegemonic function. Creativity deviates from past experiences and procedures. For example, try to imagine how to cut a cake into eight slices using no more than three cuts. Most people have trouble figuring out a way to do this because of their past experiences cutting cakes.
To solve this problem, you need to change the way you think about cakes, a piece of cake, and how to cut a cake. One solution is to cut the cake in half and stack one half on top of the other. When you break out of your established patterns and ignore the conventional wisdom on how to cut a cake, youll discover that there are an infinite number of solutions. You can change your conventional way of thinking and think out of the box. Another aspect of creativity is generating new ideas. Every new idea is a modification to an idea that already exists.
You can take any subject and change it into something else. One way of finding out how people think is to ask them to say out loud everything that they consciously thought about as they solved a problem. In this way, experimenters collect thinking aloud protocols, which are verbatim records of what the subject says he is doing while working on a problem. As you work through this problem, say out loud every thought you have while working on the problem. Its important that you try to say all of your thoughts out loud. Your false starts, mistakes, repetitions, and so on, are all valuable in understanding how you think.
The Essay on Critical Thinking Problems Hub Cap
Exercises For Lateral Thinking Problem No. 9 A young man's car developed a flat tire as he was driving along a deserted street. He pulled over to the curb and did all the usual things: removed the hub cap, unscrewed the lugs and rested them carefully in the hub cap, jacked up the car. As he was putting the spare tire onto the axle he accidentally kicked the hub cap. The lugs rolled out, and all ...
This gives you the added advantage of having someone with you to discuss your thinking process. It’s important to stop here and say out loud what you’re thinking as you go about trying to solve this problem. If you go on reading before you’ve tried to think aloud, you do not get to eat any of the cake. According to Barker these attempts to describe the thinking process are written out instead of being said aloud, and then subjected to thought protocol analysis. In thought protocol analysis, the protocol is broken down into segments so that each segment can be analyzed separately. Baker proposes that a direct link exists between creativity and important outcomes such as productivity and quality enhancement because creative thinking increases the quality of solutions to organizational problems, helps stimulate profitable innovations, revitalizes motivation, upgrades personal skills, and catalyzes performance.
I believe that developing creativity is the key task when improving your thinking potential. Besides, language comprehension may also develop our thinking because it requires that the listener makes many inferences. The kinds of inferences we make depend on context, manner, and the words selected to convey the message. There are many ways that words can be used to deliberately mislead the listener. Several ways that the choice of words can influence thought were presented. The deliberate use of emotional and non-emotional words is designed to influence how you think about a topic.
Emotional words often evoke strong mental images. Because images are highly resistant to forgetting, they are readily available when the topic is mentioned. Prototypes, or the most typical member of a category, are usually thought of first when we think about an example of a category. These prototypes bias what we think. This bias can be overcome with deliberate practice at generating examples that are not typical. I liked Stephen Barkers essay because it helped me to get new vision of thinking; however, I have my own strong beliefs on how to manage decisions I make.
