personal responsibility plays an important role in defining who we are. Taking responsibility for one’s children, a spouse, being an employee, being a citizen or even the responsibility of education in a sense could be quite overwhelming. There are many factors that contribute to a student’s success. However, personal responsibility is the most essential component to a student being successful in college. Having success is taking control of and practicing your personal responsibility.
The definition of personal responsibility according to Dictionary.com, responsibility is “the state or fact of being responsible” (2010).
Personal is defined as “intended for use by one person:” and “done in person without the intervention of another” (2010).
According to what it means to me, personal responsibility has accountability, choices, success, failure, happiness, consequences to adhere to and the ability to delay self-gratification. Personal responsibility appeals to me heavily because I have had to be personally responsible all of my life. I am who I am in life because of choices.
When practicing personal responsibility, you constantly have to improve yourself. A mirrored perception of one’s self. You have to regularly check yourself and put things back in to perspective. Personal responsibility as a student pursuing higher education is a must. Pursuing your education is costly, time consuming and it feels like takes forever to finish. It also helps to have a supporting group surrounding you. I have my husband, my children even my job pushing me to be great. After it’s all said and done, it’s about you! Keep in mind it’s also persistence and hard work! One preliminary plan would be to set myself up with positive affirmations, to do lists, and calendaring my life! I see it as this: every cause there is an effect. My cause is my education and my effect will be the point of graduation. I have to ensure that my personal responsibility is mine and mine only.
Ask yourself this, “Am I the child or the adult?” What is it that separates us? Accepting personal responsibility! According to Tracy, B.(2011) “It’s the great leap forward into maturity. Responsibility is the hallmark of the fully integrated, fully functioning human being.” Accept that you are completely responsible for yourself. Note that no one will be coming to your rescue will be the beginning of a great ending. The opposite of accepting responsibility is making excuses and blaming others for what’s not going right. Since everything we do is a matter of habit, people get into the habit of making excuses, then they get into the habit of evading responsibility at the same time (Tracy, B. (2011)).
In conclusion, although accountability is not the only choice of success in college personal responsibility is linked to that success in college for two main reasons: First, other connections such as personal responsibility in being a mother, wife, and as a student, most importantly, having control of your personal responsibility. Once you have mastered holding yourself accountable for your choices, personal responsibility is worth success!
