Values are subconscious deeply rooted beliefs that become part of our personality and guide us in our everyday lives. Values are the first step towards character building and individual personality development. The decisions that we make in our everyday life’s at home, work, school, and the friends that we choose are based on our values. Our future is dependent on our values. It is on this foundation that the whole structure of our life stands on. Everyday we come across various decisions and choices that become part of our lives ahead. These decisions could be as minor as going to a birthday party or a huge business deal.
Our decisions reflect our values. The set of values of an individual blended with knowledge, understanding, learning and experience is what makes up the intellect of a person and gives him the ability to take his own decisions. Everyone has there own core values, even politicians have their core values in the form of reducing poverty, cleaning the environment, looking after the welfare and well being of the country. Similarly every individual has its own defined set of values and norms which help him build him his own temperament, confidence and personality. (Gough, 1997).
The learning process of a child begins from the time he is born.
It is a very crucial stage as that is the time when the child would start adapting to its surroundings and respond accordingly. The parents and the family are the first institution where he gets to learn. As a child the basic values that they need to learn are the orderliness, punctuality, culture, obedience, civility and so forth. Then one starts going to the school and learns from its teachers. We are taught how to do things; we are shown both the right and the wrong path. However knowing the difference between the two we tend to violate the rules and do things that are ethically and morally incorrect .

Hence the teaching of values can not be permanent. There are people who know that they are not supposed to lie even then they would choose to lie. They were certainly not given these values however; they are misguided and choose to follow the wrong path. Personal values are related to choice. They develop from your family, culture, origin and religion. They can differ when you compare your choice with others, whereas cultural values are associated towards the society that you belong to and the norms of the society that you are part of. Eventually you get used to them and they in become the part your personality too.
People who belong to a conservative society would possess and value things differently as compared to the society that is modern and liberal. In US drinking at social gatherings is acceptable whereas the same concept in Islamic countries is seen as against the norms and culture of the society. This shows that there are certain things that are acceptable and unacceptable in the other society. However there are few things that are unacceptable in all the societies such as stealing, rape, murder, and child abuse and so forth. I am proud to belong to a family that is full of traditions and rich in culture.
That culture that is being practiced from generations is still alive in our families . My values come from my parents. I give credit to my parents. They have been there for me all this time of my life through out as a constant guidance as well as support. Since my birth there were certain rules and laws governing the family that I was told such as greeting and respecting my elders, praying five times a day, fasting in the holy month, being hospitable to the guests, being honest, coming home early, dressing up appropriately and being answerable to my parents, speaking in a polite tone and do not indulge in bad company.
Family values are given too much of importance in my life. I was told that since you are part of this family it is your duty to take care of your fathers prestige and do not take any such action that would result in embarrassment to the family later, the child is responsible for carrying the family name further hence they are expected to live up to those expectations of their parents by doing things that are towards the betterment for the family on the whole. (Pulkkinen, 2002) These are the things that we learn during our upbringing and it becomes part of our personality.

Apart from my family there were my relatives, cousins and siblings. As I got older I would spend most of my time with them hence they played the role of elder ones by guiding me in my personal as well as academic life. I got the opportunity to complete my studies from the prestigious institutions of the country. I believe good schooling is very important for the grooming of ones personality. It is not only about learning at the end of the day, it’s about how you carry yourself later in your personal and professional life and balance the both. These institutions polish you and enhance your abilities.
My teachers were there to help me in shaping my personality and building up my confidence further. I took part in debate competitions, was an active member of any kind of group discussions and social societies at school and was a good speaker in the class room too. I was the captain of the school athletic team and the head perfect in high school. Apart from the talent I was given these responsibilities because my teachers trusted me and had faith in me. These types of social activities gave me a chance to interact with different kinds of people, exchange my views with them and learn from others.
It is always good to discuss issues with others as sometimes you get to learn new things which can be very useful. A person’s value can be judged as soon as you meet them, if people like you they would trust you and would not hesitate in talking to you or being friends with you. I am fortunate to have a very nice social circle with close and sincere friends in it. They all belong to respectable and educated families. The time spend with them was worth it. I had all kinds of friends Muslims, Christians and Hindus. We all came from different backgrounds but even then we respected each others religion and valued it.

It was good to get an exposure to such friends as they gave an opportunity to be patient and tolerant to others. It is a constructive thing to know and understand your values inside out. Your value will motivate and influences one on becoming a better human being. My values and upbringing has made me what I am today, I am independent enough to take my own decisions and be sure about them too.
I am a strong and confident individual who is capable and determined to make my own place in the society. Working for an organization was an entirely different experience for me. Your values tend to direct one how one would do his work and take important decisions and take control of work. It would help you in planning your future and drawing up strategies for the accomplishment of your goals. It also affects our behavior at work with our fellow colleagues, boss and friends.
