Curiosity has been described as an essential part of life. The term curiosity is a noun, which originated from the Latin word curiosus meaning eager to know (Online Etymology Dictionary, n. d. ).
Both human beings and animals learn about the world around them through curiosity. “In essence, curiosity is a term that describes an unknown number of behavioral and psychological mechanisms that have the effect of impelling beings to seek information and interaction with their natural environment and with other beings in their vicinity,” (Wikipedia, n. d. ).
In order to survive, curiosity is necessary. For example, curiosity can lead to finding food or escaping danger. It can also lead to needed changes. “It is through curiosity, a desire to find out something, that life promotes itself, keeps itself alive, reproduces itself, and gathers resources more effectively. A lack of curiosity can lead to a lack of life, rather than the opposite,” (Taflinger, 1996).
Human beings are naturally curious.
Philosopher Isaiah Berlin once said “Only barbarians are not curious about where they come from, how they came to be where they are, where they appear to be going, whether they wish to go there, and if so, why, and if not, why not,” (Curiosity Quotes, n. d. ).
The word curiosity is synonymous with several other words such as interest, concern, eagerness, nosiness, and regard. Curiosity also has several antonyms. They include apathy, disinterest, indifference, emotionlessness, and unemotionality (Curiosity, n. d. ).

Human beings usually want to know everything, and are constantly looking for answers to their many questions. Thus, curiosity is a big part of the everyday existence of human life. “The most important outlook on life is to remain curious. Curiosity is the key to all knowledge and wisdom,” (Eclectic Commons, 2007).
