Pit bulls and terrier breeds were created in early 19th century, for the popular spectator sports of bull- and bear-baiting. In 1898 the UKC, Britain’s equivalent of the AKC, named these bull dogs the American pit bull Terrier. The AKC decided to recognize the breed in the early 1930s–but under a new name. Intending to separate it from its pit-fighting past, the AKC named it the American Staffordshire terrier, also known as a pit bull. These dogs have been used for protection not only in homes but in war, with the police and even with celebrities. Unfortunately, this same breed of dog now has a bad reputation, being called a vicious breed of dog and bully’s. I would have to disagree though, I believe that yes, there are some very mean pit bulls out there but there are also very nice and even famous ones. Not all pit bulls can be bad they aren’t born that way, they are raised that way. Saying a pit bull is born aggressive is kind of like saying a baby is born to hate.
In WW1 pit bulls were considered heroes. America’s first war dog, Stubby, served 18 months ‘over there’ and participated in eighteen battles on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, found and comforted the wounded, and even once caught a German spy by his pants. Back home his exploits were front page news of every major newspaper. He made it to Sergeant and received over eleven awards and medals. Stubby was made a life member of the American Legion, the Red Cross, and the YMCA. In 1921, the Humane Education Society awarded him a special gold medal for service to his country. It was presented by General John Pershing.

Pit Bull breeds have become famous for their roles as soldiers, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, actors, television personalities, Seeing Eye dogs and celebrity pets. Historically, the Bull Terrier mix Nipper and Petey from the Little Rascals, are the most well-known. Lesser known, but still historically important pit bulls include Helen Keller’s family dog “Sir Thomas”, Buster Brown’s dog “Tige”, Horatio Jackson’s dog “Bud”, President Theodore Roosevelt’s Pit Bull terrier “Pete”, “Jack Brutus” who served for Company K, the First Connecticut Volunteer Infantry during the civil war and Sir Walter Scott’s beloved “Wasp”. Many pit bulls are famous for saving lives; some pits saved numerous lives at once. Weela, who saved thirty-one people, twenty-nine dogs, three horses and one cat; Popsicle, a five-month-old puppy originally found nearly dead in a freezer, who grew to become one of the nation’s most important police dogs;Norton, who was placed in the Purina Animal Hall of Fame after he rescued his owner from a severe reaction to a spider bite; Titan, who rescued his owner’s wife, who would have died from an aneurysm and D-Boy, who took three bullets to save his family from an intruder with a gun. So who are we to say that all pit bulls are bad?
Pit bulls are very enthusiastic and very eager to please. They love nothing more than getting hugs and kisses. Pit bulls are very protective of family. They are also very strong willed and need discipline and most of them get bored easily, thus being why they eat the house! Pit bulls are also very determined, when they want out, they get out.

So I’m sure we will always argue whether or not pit bulls are heroes or bullies. I believe that it all depends on the owner of this dog. I personally have a pit bull that is the love of my life. She is the best dog I have ever had and I also have three young children at the house and I can honestly say that I don’t worry about her ever hurting them. If you raise a pit bull from a puppy and show him love and discipline and teach them, just show them you care, then your puppy will grow up to love you and be a great dog. But if you raise them to hate and want to fight them with other animals then yes they are going to grow up vicious and mean. So instead of looking at the breed let’s start looking at the owners. All those who think its fun to watch two animals fight to the death. Or those who like to abuse their pet. Those who like the idea of having a dog but can’t ever take care of them. Pit bulls are a breed of dog that needs love and affection. If they go a day without someone loving on them it changes them. The saying man’s best friend, well I have to agree my pit is my best friend and I can honestly say she would do anything for me or my family and we would do anything for her.
