In today’s society, there are many violators of the law. Whether minor or severe, the violations have consequences, and those are upheld by law enforcement personnel. From security guards to police officers, each law enforcement agent does his or her part in maintaining the laws and justice. By serving the community and providing safety to society, police officers especially have a job that should be admired.
The most highly sought-after and desirable profession is that of a police officer. The aspects of this job are appealing even to young children. Helping people, serving the community, and ensuring safety locally is certainly something people would love to do. Officers feel completely gratified knowing that they are influential and a positive role model in someone else’s life. The main disadvantage of the job is knowing that aiding someone could be potentially dangerous to the officers themselves, or the other people that they have assisted. There are also many hazards to officers’ safety, though.
The required characteristics for the career of a police officer are quite demanding, both physically and mentally. An officer must be incredibly stable mentally to be able to cope with the multiple negative facets of the job that occur daily. An officer must also be able to pass an agility test. The test involves running a mile in less than eight minutes, therefore being able to maintain pursuit of a suspect. Most of these attributes are taught and mastered in the time spent at a police academy.

One of the main responsibilities of a police officer is patrolling a designated area of a city on foot and/or in a patrol car. Officers perform complex investigations, render services, enforce traffic and criminal laws, and generally provide for the safety of the public. Normal hours are about 40 hours per week, and overtime is actually more than time and a half for most departments. Another duty is to file police reports in an office atmosphere. In the office, an officer may work in solitude or with his or her partner. The office is more relaxed than most other kinds of offices. Whether they are in the office or on the street, officers must be able to work with diverse groups of people, in the department and the community, to be able to render services and collect information. They use problem solving skills, creativity, and innovative approaches to identify community concerns, create options for courses of action, identify plans, and evaluate success. It is a necessity to have the capability to handle and discharge a firearm, to profile criminals, and to condition psychologically.
The starting salary wages are as follows: police officers make between $20,000 and $27,000 annually. Security guards make between $15,000 and $24,000 to begin with, corrections officers make $22,000 to $29,000 annually, and private investigators start from $12,000 to $48,000 a year. Once an officer gains experience, the salary increases to $55,000 to $65,000 annually.
Most law enforcement jobs are in high demand, which is fortunate for anyone seeking a career in that field. Law enforcement officers will be needed as long as crime exists. Other areas in law are justice offices, attorney’s offices, district buildings, and government buildings. Being employed by a county, such as a sheriff, is more beneficial because employees generally make 20% more per year. Most police officers are hired for larger cities, though, such as Chicago Police Department, New York Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department, and so on. An officer can work wherever there is a town large enough to have a police force.
After interviewing Mr. McGrath, who is a police officer for the city of Naperville, one could say that being an officer requires immense dedication. He said that he generally works twelve hours a day, and approximately forty-eight hours a week. When asked about traveling, he said other than the daily commute and his patrol route, there is no travel involved. He said that the atmosphere of the job, both in and out of the office, is very laid back and relaxed. Although it may seem a redundant question, the dress code, he said, is of course the uniform so people know who you are and what you are doing. He said one of the most important skills one could possess is people skills, and also being able to talk and calm people down. When asked about using computers and other new technological devices, he said the only necessary tools are Microsoft Office and Word. The interview was very informational, and cast a new view on the career as a police officer.

That is where the most in-depth learning of becoming an officer takes place.
