Within seconds thousands of people killed, a town buried, only later to be forgotten. By the end of this speech I hope that you will not only learn more about the significance of this great city but also understand about how the city of Pompeii fell.
Pompeii is still a very big tourists site so maybe after this speech you might be interested enough to go check out the town yourself. I don’t know about you guys but I didn’t know much about this great city. Yes I knew the basics but I didn’t really understand that much more until I started to research this topic more in depth for my speech.
Not only have I put for the research to find information about the city of Pompeii but I have also watched a few documentaries about its fall. Today in this speech I’m going to talk about everyday life in Pompeii, the first earthquake and the demise of Pompeii from Mt. Vesuvius and a city was forgotten, only to be later discovered again.
The city was founded in the early 7th century in the beautiful city of Italy. It was an avid tourist for Romans because of its villas and buildings were designed for wealthy visitors. Like many Roman towns Pompeii was walled. As you entered through the gates you would find yourself near one of the three main roads that split the town.

Most of the buildings were on the main street with floor to ceiling windows. They had an elaborate system of pumps for distributing running water throughout the city. Pompeii was very culturally different from how we are today. Their residents were very open about their lives. The main part of the house, which would have been open to the street, was called the atrium. It was a big public room where the homeowners would conduct business.
Not only was the center of the house open for public business, but it was literally open to the sky as well. Things that we like to keep behind closed doors were open for the public to see. Not only were Romans open about their lives but they were very open about their sexual escapades. Prostitution was a very common area of work for women in Pompeii. These women worked in houses called brothels all over the city. Being a prostitute was nothing to be ashamed of back then, it was just like any other job. It was just a means to make money and survive.
In fact scientists say that so many Roman men went to these brothels that about ¾ of Pompeii’s population had syphilis. They also had a lot of sexual imagery located all over the town for decoration; they did this because they believed that it honored the god of fertility. So as you can see the Romans were not very big on privacy.
The next thing I’m going to talk about is the first earthquake and the demise of Pompeii from Mt. Vesuvius. Contrary to popular belief, Pompeii was not hit without a warning.
The city lay online five miles away from the very active volcano Mt. Vesuvius. This mountain is said to be thousands of years old and has erupted at least fifty times prior to the eruption that destroyed Pompeii. In 62 AD the earthquake caused by the volcano had destroyed much of the city leaving it in ruins. Although many of its residents worked fast and hard to rebuild the city back to its original glory.
There had been many signs as to the eruption of the volcano like small earth tremors the day before its eruption. Many people tried to evacuate but most didn’t have the money to just pick up and leave. So it was mainly the wealthy that evacuated and mainly only the poor and the skeptics were left around the time of the eruption. In 79 BC Mt. Vesuvius erupted sending out a twelve mile high cloud of superheated ash and rock into the air, blocking out the sun.

The winds carried the volcanic matter towards Pompeii putting the entire town into darkness. Ash, pumice and rock fell, pilling up on streets, rooftops, and anywhere with open space. Some roofs collapsed under its weight and falling debris also caused injuries. The eruption lasted throughout the day and some people tried to escape while others just tried to wait it out. Shortly after midnight, surges of magma and volcanic mud began to spew out of the volcano along with deadly gases and ash.
Scientists say that the speed of the magma and gasses were said to be about 100 kilometers an hour. Some of the volcanic mud was stopped from doing much damage due to the walls built around the city of Pompeii. After about an hour enough ash built up that the deadly gasses and rock poured over the city walls. All the people still in the city instantly died, literally baked alive by the hot air of the surge. The last thing I’m going to talk about is a city once forgotten, only later to be discovered again.
Once the eruption ended the entire city was covered in rock and ash hidden away for two thousand years. Pompeii remained mostly untouched until 1748, when a group of explorers looking for ancient artifacts arrived in Campania and began to dig. They found that the ashes had acted as a marvelous preservative: Underneath all that dust, Pompeii was almost exactly as it had been 2,000 years before. Its buildings were intact. Skeletons were frozen right where they’d fallen. Everyday objects and household goods littered the streets.
The most famous aspect of Pompeii’s ruins is no doubt the hundreds of plaster casts that archeologists have made of the volcano’s victims. When the ash poured down over the city, people were killed instantly, in the exact poses they struck when they noticed their impending doom. As their bodies decomposed, they left perfectly-formed hollows in the ash. Historians can inject these hollows with plaster, recreating the positions of the bodies, and sometimes their terrified facial expressions.
Although scientists have been exploring the city for new information for years there is still much to be discovered. More than ¾ of the city is still incased in rock just waiting to be discovered. So today in my speech I told you guys about everyday life in Pompeii, the first earthquake and the fall of Pompeii from Mt. Vesuvius, and a city once forgotten only to be discovered again. Today Pompeii is still a huge tourist site for many people.
