Zimmerman and Martin, two names you have undoubtedly heard in the past several months. A murder of a young man in a small town took place on February 26th, 2012. The murder, an unpopular story for the first few months, soon caught fire with the people. The story had controversial issues and the attention of the public. The impact of the case was expected to extreme; many “experts” expected riots. The media portrayed the case from many skewed biases and invested in the outcome of the trail by persuading those who follow their “news” or other media outlet. In a world with so many 24 hour news cycles, much of which are dominated by the same few stories, nearly every expert or individual with significant social weight provided their view and beliefs of the case.
The mainstream media played the coverage of the case more than any story thus far this year. What made this story such high priority over any story in the rest of the world? The answer might not surprise you, ratings. People love controversy. A story with suspicion of : racism, the depths of power of a national lobbying party and vigilantism in a small town is sure to grab the imagination of the people. The story was reported on left and right wing media outlets as well as, pretty much, every possible outlet available. However, the experts sounded vastly different depending on what outlet you gave your attention to. Some displayed Trayvon Martin as a young man who was gunned down, while going to buy some candy during the NBA all star game. Others tell the story as Trayvon growing into a gangster or thug and attacking an innocent neighborhood watch Captain. The facts are all there: Trayvon was shot at close range in his neighborhood, Zimmerman had sustained injuries and Zimmerman called in a suspicious person to the police minutes before the shooting. Facts are what should drive ones judgement, but facts are not all that is reported. The opinions of others, Trayvon’s social media presence and crimes that had been happening in his own neighborhood as helped to forms people’s opinion. For the most part, you can see the dividing line, and It may not surprise you. Liberal vs Conservative, Left Wing vs Right Wing, Democrats vs Republicans drive the questions. It’s up to us, as citizens, to make up our minds for ourselves. Don’t take a half truth as the whole, consider the source, always.
