Power is an important issue in interpersonal communication. Power can shape a relationship by influencing what you do, when you do it, with whom you do it, etc. Experts identify six bases of power. These bases include referent power, legitimate power, expert power, information or persuasion power, reward power, and coercive power. Referent power is a power usually held over others when the individual wishes to be like you or be identified with you. legitimate power is a power usually held over people who believe that you have the right of power over them because of your position. Information or persuasive power is a power held over others that see you as having the ability to communicate logically and persuasively. expert power is a power over others that see you as having expertise or knowledge. Reward power is a power that you have over others you can reward. Rewards can be material (money, promotion, jewelry) or Social (love, friendship, respect).
coercive power is a power you have over others that you can punish or remove rewards should they not yield to your influence. These bases are the types of power that can be used in shaping relationships. In the movie “Wall Street” many of these powers are used by Gordon Gecko to benefit from his relationship with Bud Fox. In this paper I will analyze the bases that are used by Gordon Gecko and how they are used.
The Essay on Balance Of Power Story Narrator Relationship
Short Story's Essay In the short story, The Salt Garden, written by Atwood, Alma has a realization that the balance of power in her relationship with Theo and Mort can not last forever. There are many instances of this loss of this power balance throughout the story. In about the middle of this story, the narrator revels to the readers that both Theo and Mort possessed their homes and claimed them ...
One of the most apparent bases that Gordon Gecko uses in his relationship with Bud Fox is the Referent power base. This power is obvious because Bud wants to be a “player” and Gordon is a very successful “player.” Bud wants to be successful and by being linked with Gordon Gecko it will bring him one step closer to his goals.
Gordon Gecko also has some legitimate power over Bud. Gecko possesses the skills and knowledge that created his success, and if Bud wishes to become successful he must follow the example set by Gordon Gecko. So Gordon’s position gives him power over Bud Fox. This has the element of legitimate power.
Expert power can be seen in the relationship between Gordon and Bud because of Gordon’s expertise in Wall Street. Gordon has already set out and accomplished Bud’s goals so Bud looks to Gordon for guidance in his own quest for success. Gordon has expert power over Bud because he possesses the expertise that will lead to Bud’s success.
Obviously Bud believes that Gordon has the ability to communicate logically and persuasively. This leads to Gordon’s information or persuasion power over Bud. Bud believes this about Gordon because he has reached a position that Bud envies. Bud believes that if Gordon has reached this position then he obviously has the ability to communicate logically and persuasively. This is a good example of information or persuasion power.
Reward power is very evident in Bud’s relationship with Gordon. Gordon may not be directly responsible for all the rewards Bud receives from his relationship with Gordon, but Gordon is definitely a part of them. First of all there is the money reward. Bud receives much more money while working with Gordon than just working with his company. Money may not seem like huge reward on it’s own, like they say money can’t buy happiness. However, money has allowed Bud to pay back his father and even provide a little more, this gives Bud a feeling of self-worth not having to borrow more money from his father and being able to pay his debts. Money has also allowed bud to have a relationship with Darrian, who obviously would not have given Bud a chance had he not had the money or close relationship with Gordon Gecko.
The Essay on Truth in Management and Power Relationships
Throughout history, philosophers have come up with their versions of the actual definition for ‘truth’. The Greek philosopher Aristotle had explained truth as “To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true” [1]. Aristotle explains that truth can be described as that something that is definite ...
Probably one of the most influential powers Gordon Gecko has over Bud is the coercive power. The coercive power gives Gordon the power to take all of the rewards that Bud has been given by their relationship. This means Bud would go back to borrowing money from his father, which Bud does not enjoy to say the least. This also means his relationship with Darrian would end. Gordon holds coercive powers over Darrian as well, because he introduced her to all her clients and therefore could probably take them away. So if forced to choose between Gordon and Bud she definitely pick Gordon because of his coercive power.
As you can see each of the bases of power play an important role in the relationship between Bud Fox and Gordon Gecko. These powers allow Gordon to take advantage of Bud for his own personal benefits. The most interesting thing about these bases of power in reference to Bud and Gordon’s relationship is that the powers not only attract Bud to Gordon because of the benefits of the relationship, but these powers also bind him to the relationship because of the fear of losing these benefits.
