Preceptorship Goals As Im a nursing student and will be doing my preceptorship at a hospital with my preceptor being a Registered Nurse, my preceptorship goals will be as follows: To start as many IVs as possible to enhance my skills in providing competent and compassionate care to adults and children. IV care will include placement and maintenance of PICC and/or midline catheters, peripherial IV insertion, and blood administration, to mention a few; To take part in blood transfusion to enhance my knowledge and professional skills in what concerns the use of blood and blood components, the indications and contraindications for use, testing performed on blood, pre-transfusion patient testing, to understand the steps in the event of blood transfusion reaction, etc; Wound care during the preceptorship Ill have an opportunity to enhance my professional skill sin wound care. This will include chronic wound healing, providing direct care, consultation and education to patients and their families for the management and assessment of chronic and acute wounds (e.g. pressure ulcers, surgical wounds, venous, neuropathic, arterial, diabetic ulcers, fistulae, to mention a few); Patient assessment, as it is a primary skill in nursing. It will include understanding the signs and symptoms, performing a nursing diagnosis, a head to toe assessments, completing checklists for nursing procedures, taking an oral temperature, etc; Pain management to help patients feeling comfortable despite illness or injury. I will provide pain relief measures for patients with acute, chronic or symptom-related pain; provide patient education to assists patients learn how to manage and ease their pain.
