Self-doubt Although Scott took a step in the right direction by beginning nightly accounting courses, all of her efforts may be in vain if she does not change her attitude. Burroughs has already given Scott valuable advice on how to change her attitude toward her qualifications and the advice proved to be a success. Now, Scott must continue to seek and present her positive qualifications and build her self-esteem.
Each of the ways Scott may prepare herself for career advancement mentioned below can help her build self-esteem and always go into an interview with a positive demeanor. Lack of communication Whether Scott’s immediate supervisor did not notice her depressed spirits or her supervisor just ignored them, there was a break down in communication. This breakdown may have been caused by many factors, one important factor being a lack of relationship between Scott and her supervisor. Depending on the position of her immediate supervisor, Scott may not have had much interaction with them.
Obviously she did not feel comfortable discussing her problems with her supervisor but felt comfortable with Burroughs, someone who she may have rarely had contact with. Now that Scott is in a new position, she should try and establish a beneficial relationship with her immediate supervisor so they can discuss problems she may be having at work. Although her immediate supervisor may not be receptive to the lack of relationship now, once Scott brings up this topic, they can work together to create an effective and mutually beneficial relationship. Ways Scott can prepare herself for career advancement
The Essay on F Scott Fitzgerald

A period within time which the passive behaviors, beliefs, and purity of the past generations, were tossed aside to create room for the changes America was about to experience! As Scott has already discovered, the main problem she is having obtaining job positions is her attitude going into interviews. Burroughs has already given her advice on how to change her attitude, by stressing her favorable qualities rather than focusing on only having a high school education. Now that Scott has entered a position that offers the opportunity for advancement, she should take control of her career. Five ways she can do so is by attending career-planning workshops, improving her networking skills, seeking out a mentor, practicing her interview skills, and searching for training programs.
Attend career-planning workshops Career-planning workshops provide employees with an interactive way to assess their own values, interests, abilities, and goals. Attending a workshop would allow Scott to compare and discuss concerns and thoughts about her career with employees who may have dealt with similar situations. Having a space where she can connect with other employees, rather than management, can provide Scott with the environment she needs to openly discuss problems she may be having. Scott would also be able to gather feedback from others in the group and use this to help make decisions about her career path.
Improve networking skills While being a receptionist, Scott may not have noticed the informal network between men within the organization she works for. Such informal networks provide men with information on advancement opportunities and career tips given by senior (male) members. Now that she is beginning a career where she may encounter such groups, Scott must be prepared to deal with such networks between her male co-workers. Rather than wait and see a male counterpart prosper from such networks, Scott should search and join a female network with her company.
Joining a women’s network within her company will give Scott a level playing field with her male co-workers, providing her with encouragement and guidance from women in management positions. A women’s network may also provide Scott with contacts she may not have had access to before. Seek out a mentor A great way for Scott to receive guidance for her career development would be to seek out a mentor. First Sue must decide on who she would like to have as a mentor. She may choose someone in top management she already has an existing relationship with or she may use a women’s network to find a mentor as well.

Once she has chosen a mentor, Scott must research her chosen mentor and make contact with this person if she does not know them well. Next, Scott should request help on a task from the potential mentor, if the potential mentor is glad to help, then Scott may proceed to schedule a meeting with said mentor. If she goes into the meeting well prepared with questions and goals, then Scott will more than likely continue to meet with a mentor, providing her with the support she needs to advance her career. Practice and improve interview skills
Taking Burroughs’ advice to stress positive qualities during an interview was a great first step for Sue. Now that she has identified and fixed one problem she was facing in interviews, Scott should identify other areas of needed improvement. Instead of just practicing for interviews in front of others and then receiving feedback, Scott has the option of videotaping herself while practicing. Doing so will allow Scott to see exactly what actions need to be modified, while also receiving feedback from another party.
Once she has developed and improved her problem areas, watching herself complete a successful interview can give Scott the confidence she needs going into her next interview. Search for training programs Many companies provide employees with optional training programs to help advance their careers. Unfortunately, many times companies do not properly advertise the programs and employees are unaware the programs exist. With this in mind, Scott should speak to other employees and management to find out what training opportunities are offered by her company.
Sue is obviously determined to advance her education, as can be seen by her voluntary participation in evening accounting courses, and training programs can help her develop different parts of her skill set not covered in her accounting courses. *** Now that Scott has the opportunity for advancement she should not take a chance in missing it. The five options listed above, are a great way for Scott to take advantage of all opportunities available to her and develop a career path which suits her specific wants and needs. If she uses the tools mentioned in this report, there is no doubt she will be successful in her endeavors.
