Thanksgiving. What is the whole holiday about? I’ll tell you about thanksgiving. First of all, I’ll tell you the general information of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is an annual holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada. In Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday of September. And in the United States it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. In Canada it is celebrated October 11, 2010 and in the US it will be celebrated on November 25, 2010. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observance to thanks to God, but nowadays not really any more. There is very much disagreement about the history and the historic origins of the holiday. So, I won’t tell you about the history of Thanksgiving. The most important activity is eating dinner with friends and/or family. The most important dish is of course a large roast turkey, most side dishes consist of stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, etc. And many people serve different pies for dessert. After the meal, most people do additional activities, for example playing card games. Now I’m going to tell you about Thanksgiving parades.
There are different Thanksgiving parades in the US. One of the oldest Thanksgiving parades in the US is ‘’The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’’. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual event starting at 09:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Thanksgiving Day. During the parade, floats and big balloons in the shape of popular characters of cartoons cross the streets of New York City. At least I’ll tell you about the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation. The National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation is a very special ceremony. It’s an annual ceremony held each year since 1947. And since 1989, the presidents of the United States pardon turkeys, in other words, the president spare the turkey from being slaughtered. Before 1989, the presidents just stand with the turkey and show him to the media. Those turkeys aren’t pardoned. You can see on the beamer the incumbent president of the United States, Barack Obama in 2009, with the turkey ‘’Courage’’, which was pardoned by president Obama.
