“Supervision is a process in which a skilled and qualified member of the profession mentors, teaches, and facilitates the growth of a novice member of a profession” (Thompson & Moffett, 2010).
Two key models used in counseling are the interpersonal approach and intergrative development model. The interpersonal approach focuses on the supervisee’s abilioty to learn, grow and develop. One model is called the discrimination model which focuses on “intervention, conceptualization, and personalization skills of the trainee” (Nelson, Johnson and Thorngren, 2000).
Describe benefits (to you and your clients) of supervision during your counselor training and after your formal training is complete.
Why is it ethically important to have clinical supervision? “Supervision is a process in which a skilled and qualified member of the profession mentors, teaches, and facilitates the growth of a novice member of a profession” (Thompson & Moffett, 2010).
Counseling supervision is important because it allows the supervisor and the trainee to continue working on professional development. Clinical supervision is “an intervention that is provided by a senior member of a profession to a junior member or member of that profession,” so it would be unethical to not train and help develop the junior member. (Milne and Oliver, 2000) One of the greatest benefits from supervision is the “intellectual stimulation,” the time they share together can be very beneficial to both parties. (Milne and Oliver, 2000)
The Term Paper on The Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision
Prison officers, are the main front lines of the staff in Prison Service; they are the ones who are solely in charge of maintaining the security of the prison and the inmates (Prison officers n. d. ). Part 2: Consultation and Advocacy
Define consultation and advocacy in the field of counseling. Consultation is a “complementary model of practice for counselors acting as social justice advocates” (Consultation & Social Justice Advocacy).
Consultation can be a wide range of services that can vary significantly. Consultation in professional counseling involves helping students through interaction with another professional consultee. Advocacy is the process of supporting a cause and is used both for the profession and for the clients. Counselors need to “become agents of social change, intervening not just in the lives of their clients but in the world around them as well” (Myers et al, 2002).
Analyze the similarities and differences between consultation and advocacy for your area of specialization. Consultation and advocacy are similar in the way that each practices and both encourage counselors to act outside of the normal counselor and client interaction.
Practices such as discussing and working with other patrons and coming up with “policies that may promote marginalization of vulnerable community members are used by both consultants and advocates to achieve desired goals.” (Consultation & Advocac) How do you see your role related to advocacy or consultation as you become a professional within your area of specialization? What institutional or social barriers can you identify that might impede access, equity, or success for your clients? Counselor’s ethnic or racial identification and their practice setting may both contribute to social barriers in the field. There are many clients that need counseling but don’t receive it because they don’t have the finances to afford it. What strategies can you utilize in your work to address multicultural issues and advocate for diverse populations? Provide a hypothetical example of consultation or advocacy for a child, adolescent, adult, couple, or family. The paper should be 2–3 pages in length and include a minimum of three academic references.
