Professional/Workplace dilemma paper Most of people, who had acquired their degrees at university of Phoenix, have experienced certain professional dilemmas and value conflicts during the course of their studies. I was no exception in this respect. The most important ethical issue that I have experienced upon beginning my studies was the fact that I had to combine them with my work as casino manager on duty. This, of course, required a clear understanding of what my priorities were, on my part. It wasnt easy, as both of my work and studies are very important to me. The main requirement at my casino job is to present myself sharply on time.
Yet, obtaining degree online requires a great deal of studying at home, so I had a problems with my supervisors several times over the fact that I studied well into the night while at home and the next day when I showed up for work, I looked very sleepy with red shot eyes. I was being warned that I might get fired, as my studies intervene with my job. I realized that some kind of solution had to be found to resolve this issue, as I wanted to continue my studies and work in casino at the same time. Luckily enough, such solution was found I realized that the only way for me to combine studying and working was to perform according to minimal requirements at both places. This, of course, made my efficiency as casino manager and student to drop; yet it allowed me to pursue my educational and career making goals more or less freely. For me, the ethical problem here, was the fact that authority derives from power and this is natural. Yet, while trying to find a solution for combining my work and studies, I realized that on few occasions I actually had to deal with power deriving from authority. Some of my supervisors have less experience of working at casino, yet they are able to exercise their authority over me simply because of their position. The ethical issue back than was the question of whether it is appropriate to intentionally lower the level of ones performance in order to reach some additional goals, such as obtaining online degree. In my opinion, I had all the rights to do this, as there never been an intention on my part to lower my performance at casino to inappropriate level. We, as individuals can only function with the society on the principles of social agreement.
Every person has the right to have its own agenda as long as he realizes itself as part of society, which requires making certain sacrifices on his part. Yet those sacrifices have to be reasonable, after all we can only go so far surrendering some of our rights for the sake of common good. We live in consumerist society and our personal goals have the foremost importance for us. Therefore I think that I acted adequately, while trying to find a solution for combining my continuing education with my work at casino. My personal values had played an important role in how I handled the matter. One of such values is my sense accuracy when it comes to executing my primary duties at work.
I always do everything on time. So, when I was facing the problem of how to band together obtaining degree and working at the same time, I realized that bending my principles of accuracy wasnt the option. I can say that I managed to obtain my goals without having to reconsider my personal values and it ultimately proved to be the right approach. The outcome of how I dealt with above mentioned problem appears to be quite obvious. I still have the full time job and although my performance level somewhat dropped, it still remains high enough, so Im under no immediate danger of being fired. At the same time Im going to get university education, which will broaden my horizons upon obtaining a degree.

There are many other lesser issues involved in my relation to studying and work, yet it becomes easier for me to deal with arising problems, as my educational level had considerably risen since beginning of my studies at University of Phoenix. Ive won so much by being able to study, and even though my customers havent benefited a lot because of that, yet I cant say that theyve lost much either. When discussing the potentional consequences that will come as a result of how I handled the issue, it has to be kept in mind that since there are so many factors involved, it appears that my forecast might not be very accurate. Yet, there are certain tendencies can be defined that enable me to come with some general predictions. First of all, it appears that lowering the standards of service will go unnoticed by majority of casinos guests as such process is a common place occurrence within the majority of similar institutions. The issue has been effectively resolved and now I think that I can bring the quality of my services to the level it used to be, before I began studying at University of Phoenix. The degree Im going to get is closely related to my present occupation and it will enable me to improve my performance as casino manager in the long run. The lowering of my performance standards was only temporary, yet it was necessary as part of a compromise I had to agree for to be able to study. I consider my way of dealing with workplace dilemma was an effective one and only possible under given circumstances.
