Queen Victoria was one of the greatest women ever to sit on the throne of England. Her long reign lasted from 1837 to 1901. Her efforts during these years changed England very much. Ironically, Queen Victoria was never meant to reign England. Her seat on the throne came about in an unusual way. After the death of Queen Victoria’s uncle, King George IV, the throne was meant to be passed on to one of George III’s grandchildren. However, no one in the royal family had given birth to any legitimate children except for the Duke of Kent, Victoria’s father.
So at the age of 18, Victoria, daughter of Duke Edward of Kent, became Queen Victoria of England. This was due to a distant relation to the Queen Victoria was born because her parents wanted to bear the next heir to the throne. She was brought into the world for political reasons. The story of the royal family members’ attempts to gain the crown begin early in the 1800’s. In November 1817 the only daughter of the Prince of Regent, Charlotte, the wife of Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, died in childbirth. None of the surviving among George III fifteen children had a legitimate child qualified to reign.
Some were unable for one reason or another to have children. After the news of Princess Charlotte’s death, Edward, the Duke of Kent, studied the table of succession to see who would be the next in line to become heir to the throne. Edward a man who’d spent alot of his life doing military duty in Canada and Gibraltar, felt that a new duty faced him. Victoria was a good healthy baby, but it wasn’t long before tragedy struck. In December of that year Edward decided to take his family to the warmer seashore, so they settled at Sidmouth. He went for a walk on rainy day in January and came home with wet feet. Instead of coming home and changing his shoes and socks he insisted on playing with Victoria. He caught cold, which turned into pleurisy, and on the 11th of January he died. He left his widow and child with nothing but an ovewhelming debt. Victoria was only seven months old. Thankfully, her brother Leopold had rushed to her side and helped her through the ordeal. Victoire and Victoria returned to Kensington Palace with the permission of King George IV. The Duchess put her sadness behind her and let the dream of her daughter on the throne of England rule her life. The Duchess of Clarence, King George IV wife, lost a second child and Victoria’s chances seemed to be growing stronger. On June 20, 1837, with the death of Victoria’s uncle, William IV, she became Queen at the age of 18. Victoria was crowned in November, 1837 at the Covent Garden Theater. Many people asked whether or not a girl of eighteen was fit to assume the responsibilities of being queen, but Victoria proved them wrong.
She was very proud to be Queen and enjoyed her duties. She did not take them for granted. Queen Victoria’s reign was long. She never faltered nor showed weakness throughout its entirety. During her reign, Victoria had nine children and a maintained a marriage. She is looked upon historically as woman of both strength and femininity.
While Victoria was on the throne, Britain became the most powerful industrial nations in the world. Victoria’s great determination, her belief in her judgement, and her honesty were the qualities that enabled her to persevere. the young Queen became a very real power in the government of her country and, ultimately, her empire.
