Ray Bradbury is one of the most well known science fiction writers of the twentieth century. His stories have been used on television, radio , theater, film, newspapers, and have been published in every major American magazine (Bradbury 205).
His style of writing as seen in Th Martian Chronicals leaves many unanswered questions so the readers’s imagination is left to wander at all the possibitities. It is this magnetic quality in his writings that makes the reader not want to put the book down. Bradbury’s ability of putting the reader in a spellbound state has made his writings successful and profitable. His imagination is intensely involved in his stories and these fantasies and dreams are shared with readers ranging from astronaunts to third graders (Bradbury CLC 86).
“The Million-Year Picinic” is one of his short stories better known in The Martian Chronicals.
It is the last of his adventures to Mars and deals with a family escaping a nuclear war on Earth and landing on Mars. The family intends to find the perfect city to live in and expects to reproduce and eventually regenerate mankind on Mars. Walter Bradbury (no relation), a friend of Ray’s, noticed a connection between the editorials and convinced him to turn the short stories into a novel involving life on Mars and the end of the Earth (Bradbury 205).
