Animal Records have been in place in Zoo’s for years it is important to keep a Record of all Arrivals, Departures, Births and deaths. By keeping these There is always some form of “time line” available for each individual animal and if that animal happened to die there should be Written Record of how the death occurred to avoid in future.
Good Records Maintain Accurate information and should include all animals within a collection. Live animals in the collection is what attracts visitors, management of this resource requires information, All animals should have solid records dated back so any information needed is able to be found, animals without records can become increasingly be worth less. If a collection or even a pet shop is selling an animal with no records of basic things such as health, age, weight can result in the animal either not being sold or being seen as worth much less than it actually is.
Animals have time Value [seaza.org, 2004] similar to a financial investments, each animal a zoo has that is not documented can reduce the value of a collection at a later date. If an one animal is not documented its offspring may be worth less as there will be no records of a known pedigree, this could mainly affect Dog Breeders. Good veterinary records can reduce losses of animals from disease; it makes it possible to track disease. Such as if a dog becomes ill with the parvovirus virus and a new owner has little knowledge of the disease they can check medical records to justify how far along the problem is and what steps to take to get the animal back to good health. It’s a good thing to keep records on other animals with the same problem as a solution that worked on one animal may not work on another.

How to keep Records?
Do not trust memory everything should be recorded, things can be forgotten. Records keepers should not wait until a week later to write down any information. All records should be written as if the reader knows nothing about that animal; anyone should be able to understand the information. Go through all paperwork before putting onto a filing system All Records need to be correct. Always include the Species and specimen identification numbers on all of the documents.
Record Vocabularies for Zoo’s
Here is just a small list of the words used within record keeping most collections will use these Terms and know the meaning.
0.0.0 indication how many males, females and Unknown individuals that are in a group. For an example 2.4.2 would mean there is two males, four Females and Two unknown.
Accession Numbers – is the individual number for the animal in a collection to be written down with any entry that concerns that Specimen.
Archive – Files to be moved to safe storage location to refer back to at a later date.
ARKS – (Animal Record Keeping System) Specialised computer system Developed by ISIS for collecting, Reporting and analysing animal Data.
Dam – Female Parent
Sire- Male Parent
DeAccession – When a individual is permanently removed from a collection
ISIS – (International Species Information System) A non-Profit membership organisation for collecting Animal Data.
Specimen – An individual Animal
Medical Record Requirements
Medical Records need to be available for everyone involved in an animals care. it is valuable information for future use if a similar problem was to arise, animals records should include Health records, clinical, Anaesthesia and surgery records.

All animals in a collection should have Medical records, these include:
– Dogs
– Cats
– Rabbits
– Farm Animals
– Exotics
– Primates
Infants can be apart of a Dam’s Medical records un till individually identified or has been weaned.
* Information that is required in Medical Records should include:
* Identifications
* Description of injury or illness
* Dates (medications, visits from the veterinarian, Date animal Recovered or death)
* Treatment plans
* Results
* Everything to be signed
* Weights
* Diagnosis
* Restrictions for the animal
* Surgeries
* Vaccinations
* Behavioural abnormalities
* Faecal exams
Medical Records should be kept for Cats and dogs for at least 3 years after the animal’s death, in the case of other domestic animals only a year is required.
Requirements for Horses
Horses are defined as a food producing animal therefore records should be that a owner should keep would be any veterinary medicines administered. However if the horse has a passport which states it is not for human consumption the only requirement is to keep a vaccination record in the horse passport
