Williams, initially show the attribution to an object, such as a work of art consisting of one’s own emotional or intellectual feelings about it, otherwise known as empathy. In the song “Not Afraid” by Eminem, also known as Marshall Bruce Mather III, when listening to Marshall’s lyrics, we feel empathy towards him as author who has written his emotions thorough a work of art. In each song, and specifically this song, he relates to his life, “It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me. Admittedly I probably did it subliminally for you.” This statement relates to many various issues through his life. First, he married his high school sweetheart. Twice. In the first marriage, his wife Kimberly, attempted suicide and sued Eminem for defamation after he depicted her violent death in his song “Kim”. After the first divorce , they decided to work it out, and got remarried 5 years after the divorce. They re-married to keep the relationship with there daughter strong, but the same year, the couple decided to claim a divorce, and share custody of their daughter Hailie who he refers to in every song he’s created. Also, Mather’s suffered a drug addiction. He was vouched by a celebrity rapper he was clean ever since he got caught for addiction. But he turned to Zolpidem sleeping pills, because he had trouble sleeping. This caused Mathers to go into rehab for a “dependency of sleep medication”. In 2009 Mathers was on a talk show, and speaking with the British talk show host Johnathan Ross, and admitted that at the height of his addiction, he considered suicide. He also confirmed, comment that “Rap was my drug” that he had to retort to make him feel that. But now that he’s out of that stage, rap makes him feel high again. Another issue that arised with Eminem was he had a friendship with Mariah Carey, but he misunderstood and claimed to have a relationship with her, but she denied resulting him to crate songs about her. In the poem “Songs to Survive Summer” by Robert Hass, as we read his moving, inspirational work of art, we feel empathy towards him and date back to the day when he wrote this poem. Hass is a California poet who’s words are well known for their West Coast subject and attitude. He was born in San Francisco and grew up in San Rafael. He grew up with an alcoholic mother, a major topic in the 1997 poem collection. Also, his brother encouraged him to dedicate himself to writing. Robert Hass is married to the poet and antiwar activist Brenda Hillman, who was also a professor, who was a big influence to his poetry writing. Lew Welch was also his influence, while he was beginning his career of poetry, he would always cite his work Hass spent 12-20 years translating poetry, while studying at Berkeley. “Should I whisper in her ear, death is the mother of beauty?” His mother was a big affect on why he wrote poetry, and in this poem he relates back to his life, which we, while reading the poem feel empathy towards his past life to the present.

Which is to show empathy is to identify with another’s feelings. It is to emotionally put yourself in the place of another. The ability to empathize is directly dependent on your ability to feel your own feelings and identify them.
