Over the weekend, I watched one of my favorite television shows. This show is no longer on air anymore but in my opinion it was one of the best shows of its time. This show is called “Cheers.” I watch this show at least twice a week, however, after accessing this reflection assignment on the common culture, my eyes were opened to many different aspects of the social setting that “Cheers” presents.
“Cheers” is a comedy sitcom taking place in a Boston pub in the 80’s and 90’s. The social setting is a cheerful and happy bar where people go to rid themselves of their problems and to find a good laugh. The main character is the bartender who is a former Red Sox baseball player who is very smooth with the ladies and a good friend to all. The other bartender is a young, single, goofy air head who always presents a smart response or a sarcastic remark. The owner of the bar is a gorgeous blonde who the main bartender is always trying to seduce but she always gets turned off by his attempts. The regulars at the bar consist of an overweight middle aged business man, a postal worker, and a psychologist. Together they all provide hilarious situations that make this sitcom one of the best.
This sitcom reveals a lot about the culture. The messages it presents are those of a carefree laughing environment. It shows not to take life too seriously and to enjoy the small things in life such as friends and family. Although the setting is in a bar, alcohol consumption is not really promoted. The main bartender stays sober and swore off alcohol. There are few quirks about drinking and the main themes are about the value of friends.
The Term Paper on The Waste Land Presents Us with a Portrait
The first character we are presented to within the Waste Land is Marie, whose privileged lifestyle and nationality, German, indicated by Eliot’s use of different settings, “Starnbergersee” is used to demonstrate that all of society is negative and his presentation of a society full of despair and isolation is a universal issue. Marie has travelled much of the world and spends her time “in the ...
I realized some things about this sitcom that I did not see before. For instance, out of three shows that I watched, I did not see one African American. Granted, this show connects with more of the white audience, I still think they should have had more diversity. I also noticed some sexism that I do not think they could have gotten away with today. The ages are all around the same ranging from early thirties to early forties.
I have always enjoyed the sitcom “Cheers.” It really displays a upbeat and happy mood. After accomplishing this assignment I have realized so much more about the leisure and social aspects of this sitcom as well as others. It is nice to have assignments that make the mind think how leisure is displayed throughout our own culture is many ways!
