The religious group I wish to write about is Buddhism. According to the Britannica Encyclopedia, Buddhism is defined as a religion of eastern and central Asia growing out of the teaching of Gautama Buddha that suffering is inherent in life and that one can be liberated from it by mental and moral self-purification. The religion of Buddhism differs from other religious groups is that there is no one Almighty God. In Buddhism, the ultimate objective of followers is enlightenment and/or liberation from Samsara; rather than to go to a Heaven (or a deva realm in the context of Buddhist cosmology).
Buddhism does not point fingers or judge others as other religious groups do. I believe that some experience Buddhism has had with other religious groups would be the questioning of them not believing in a God. I am sure many people have developed hatred and have judged them for not having a God. I am also sure other religious groups have tried to deny them as being a religious group due to the fact that they do not worship a God or Gods. I am sure other religions have tried to cast them out and judge them for their beliefs.
Some ways that Buddhism has contributed to the American culture is the fact that it has become one of the major religious groups here in America behind Christianity, Judaism and being non religious at all (“Buddhism In The United States”, 2013).
Buddhism in American is practiced by many Asian Americans and a large number of people who have converted to the religion. Approximately 1.2 million people practice Buddhism here in America as of 2012. Buddhism has experienced persecution from non-Buddhist or other Buddhist during the history of Buddhism. Buddhist has experienced unwarranted arrest, beating, torture, imprisonment, and even execution. As early as 1953 there were rumored allegations in Vietnam of discrimination of Buddhist. Catholic Vietnamese raided armed by the French, were raiding villages. Before reading about Buddhism I really did not even know what it was. I do know understand the religion more clearly than I did before.

Racial/Ethnic Group:
The racial/ethnic groups I choose to discuss are the people of African descent (black).
This racial group differs from all other racial/ethnic groups. They have the darkest of skin tone than any other racial group. There are probably three ethnic groups that can be identified as black (African descent).
That would be African immigrants, African Americans and Diasporic Africans which are from the Caribbean, all in which are of African descent. There is an estimated 1500-2000 different African language. black people have had many experiences from other racial groups, in which majority of these experiences have been very negative. They have experienced prejudice, discrimination, death and slavery by other races. I feel despite the hardships this race has endured, they have contributed to the American culture in many ways. African American culture is rooted in the historical experience of when they where transported from Africa to America as slaves.
The culture is rooted in Africa. Elaborate and significant rituals were apart of the African culture. West African believed that there were spirits that dwelled in nature and respected nature with mind-ful care. The culture also believes in spiritual life source existence after death including spiritual possession. Islam was introduced to Americans in the beginning of the 18th century. Other contributors to the American culture include music, art, literature, religion and food. Food and music being of my favorite! Some specific examples or prejudice and discrimination towards the Black race would first have started with slavery and later segregation after slavery was abolished. Black people could not eat in the same restaurant or even go to the same school as a white person. I believe the sources of this discrimination all roots back to the beginning of slavery. Black people were brought here to be slaves and given no respect or rights and after they were freed many people were still angry and saw them as lesser beings, so they continued to treat them as if they were lesser beings. I feel that even before researching on this racial group I had a very clear understanding of it due to what I have learned from the race their selves and history. I am white and I have been in interracial relationships with black people for years.

My recent relationship taught me a lot about his race and culture. He gave me the insight of it from the black man’s perspective and a lot more truths than what the schools teach. From my readings I basically just gained a little more confirmation to what I have learned from this race in my own personally experiences.
In conclusion, both the groups I chose to discuss have experienced similar prejudices and discrimination. Both have died and suffered tremendously for being who they are. They have had their homes and lives destroyed, been imprisoned and judged just for being who they are. They are different because one is of course a religion while another is a race and these two do not originally practice the same religion. Buddhism originated in India but Islam is the original practiced religion of Africans. Now the religious practice of black people is very diverse. I feel that people discriminated so much against these two because they were very different from everyone else. While everyone else seemed to worship a God, the Buddhist did not and the black people were different in color and culture beliefs, then being enslaved, I can see why people discriminated, because people fear what they do not know or understand.
