The process of collecting and analyzing data has become a work of art when compared to 100 years ago, when research was not even in the vocabulary of scholars. Today many research terminologies explain and guide us through the network of the research process. Personally, I look at the research process as a road map to a truthful unbiased worth of information. Some of the terminology needed to successfully understand the research process includes: Replication: “Replication is the repetition of experiments or studies utilizing the same mythology” (Hagan, 2010).
In police, work detectives use the research process of replication to replicate how the crime was committed in the research process Verification: Verification “is confirmation of accuracy of finding or attainment of greater certitude in conclusion through additional observation” (Hagan, 2010).
In the criminal justice system, many forms of detectors utilized to to provide an accurate response. Theory: Theory is” described previously as attempt to develop plausible explanations of reality” (Hagan, 2010).
When theories try to arrange and classify events the research process takes a different form of events. Therefore, pointing into perspective the plausible explanation. Research Shock: Research Shock “is a sense of disorientation experienced by a person when suddenly confronted with an unfamiliar style of presentation and language” (Hogan, 2010).

The first step of the research process is problem formulation. Problem formulation serves as the step in knowing the there is a problem that needs to be investigated. Therefore, at this point, we are aware of the problem and we need to solve it.
In the criminal justice system as an example of problem, formulation can be the high rate of inmate violence before the released into general population. The second step on the research process is research design. Research design is the building block or foundation of the problem that needs investigation. In this step the researcher in the criminal justice system investigates and acquires as much information as possible to gain understanding on the problem. As an example, the formulation was, inmate violence before the release into public.
The research design would be, the research conducted on the individuals being released, by examining in depth their documents and relationship to their violence. The third step on the research process is Data collection method. In this step the researches focuses on how the data from research design would be acquired so to gain a full perspective on the problem. In the example noted, the researcher might use questionnaires or interviews with the inmates being released into general population. This part of the process is important; the information gathered in this process would open a window into what is the cause of the problem.
The validity of the questionnaires or interview is as important as the final analysis. The forth step on the research process is analysis and presentation of findings. In this step, the researcher has gathered the problem, investigation of the problem, and has a full perspective of through data collecting. It is time to analyze the data and present it. The researcher at this point might find that the inmates being released into general population belong to rival gang. The fifth step on the research process is conclusion, interpretation, and limitations.
The Essay on Defining research problem and setting objectives
1. Defining Research Problem and Setting Objectives The Research Problem. The problem identified might be too broad in coverage; therefore it has to be narrowed down to a specific research problem in a specific setting. Question relative to the problem may be raised: a. Are the problems on the youth’s undesirables values also felt in the local setting of the study? b. To what extent are these ...
In this step the researcher would give a conclusion on his/her finding and interpret so the analysis is clear. In the example, the inmates’ violence before being released into general public is caused by the fear of death, because the inmates being released belong to rival gangs. The example given is a basic example however, “A national prison research commission report question and the legitimacy and ethically of prison research in the United States” (Hagan, 2010).
Research in the criminal justice system can be complicated and expensive requiring research funds to fix or investigate a problem.
In a police department, the researcher has to be very careful depending on the type or research being conducted; furthermore, not knowing how to conduct a research can have dire consequences possibly involving ethics. A non-balanced research would produce erroneous interpretations, non-valid analysis, and perhaps exaggerated limitations. The conclusion would be mere speculations with non-usable data. In the criminal justice system, research plays a major role when trying to figure crime statistics, or hot spots in a city.
Through research, departments are able to view a glimpse into what is happening with areas of problem or change. In research, all the terms covered are important when evaluating and analyzing research studies or data. As covered before, research serves as a map, when followed it would provide concise information needed in the final analysis. The criminal justice system has grown and continues growing intertwining the scientific research needed to explore new and old possibilities. Keeping in mind that ethics serves an important part of any research.
In research time is needed, when completing a research and time is limited possibilities of a non-working research are high. For that reason, I would consider time to be part of the research process. In order to evaluate analyze and reach a conclusion one must put in the effort necessary to reach a valued research. Personally, research is essential, it provides information that otherwise would not be available. When looking at the criminal justice system research plays a major role, from courts choosing a jury, to police department running investigations.
