S. S. , Block A Short Answer Essay Questions #3 If you were either a woman or a slave living in the colonies in 1776. Write a paragraph expressing your reaction to the Declaration of Independence. Although the Declaration states, “All men are created equal”, did it apply to women? During the writing of the Declaration, there was much dispute over what was included. The rights of women, also, were not protected anywhere in the document, but if the new nation was to value liberty, then all people should be included.
The women, who had helped the Patriots greatly, were not mentioned at all in the Declaration of Independence. Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams, was very distressed about this issue and even appealed to her husband. She asked him to “remember the Ladies” and that if they were not remembered in the Declaration, a Rebellion would break out for their cause. Abigail was not afraid to state what she believed and gave advice to her husband on many of the political matters he came across in Congress. Although many people disagreed with not mentioning the rights of women in the Declaration, the rights of women were not protected by the document. The work done by the Daughters of Liberty, who made clothes and supported boycotts, or the nurses, messengers and spies were shown no gratitude during the beginning of the new nation.
In short, the women were deprived of their natural rights during the writing of the Declaration, something that should belong to all citizens, not just the men.
