It is considered as the forth pillar, so with this due responsibility media should be honest in conveying the true image of our society and its problems with some ethical boudaries. In recent times, Pakistani media has undergone many changes. It strives to create awareness among masses about women’s rights and speaks largely of feminism. In rural areas, women lacked awareness and education. But due to media, now they are more aware and the gender gap has also reduced.
However, people have also given negative opinions of the role of media that it has a detrimental role to play and doesn’t facilitate women in any way. Some are of the opinion that media has projected a negative image of women and brought her weak points to the forefront. The drama industry has a big responsibility to shoulder in this regard. I consider Media has played an instrumental role in highlighting the issues of women. Once the media covers the issues, then they are brought to the Government’s attention and includes it in its policy making, after which they are implemented.
Through our media the major changes we can see is bringing up the statuses of women. It enabled people to consider education the first and foremost obligation and neccesity to spend a standard life. There was a time in past when women were not respected to work in different fields whereas now they are prominently seen everywhere. Media has brought levels for the women to work with freedom and given them choices of many fields. Media has been hugely important to women in the twentieth century. It provided leisure, education and an engagement with the wider world to many housewives. As both radio and television are domestic mediums they have given women a voice and increasingly become an important space for discussion of women’s issues and a questioning of women’s role. It has played in the contested and changing social position of women thorugh special days celebrations like Internatonal women’s day, Mothers day etc which have shown the work and prominent participation of women for the development of our country. From there to a simple labour women who struggled too hard to run her family by bringing their stories on screen ven through dramas. It gave them the right to participate, right to speak up, right to take decisions and be the active citizen of pakistan to work for the develpoment of their country.
Now our women are not fighting for the basic neccesities of live but for the rights of equal participation in this society and for this purpose media is the only voice of them. Media is a cultural force which not only reflects the social reality but also modifies it according to the demands of the age . The contents of communication are reflective of the values of society which in turn , are nurtured and sustained through communication media. The treatment meted to women and girls in different modes of human communication mirror the prevailing attitudes and values towards women in particular society and reflect their role and status there .
Women constitute more than half of the population of Pakistan but still she is submissive and left behind in many fields by particular policies and mentalities. Despite sacrificial participation of women in the movement of independence, they remained ignored even after the independence of Pakistan.
