The roles of women have change a lot in America over time. Not only were the women changing, but their clothing styles have changed, these changes were caused by many different things. Throughout everything, our history has impacted the country that we have become, and the people that we are in the United States today.
In the 1890s women were not a very large part of society, however, they were starting to become more and more involved. In the 1890s, more women were starting to go to college, they also began working in white-collar jobs, and began to get freedom from their husbands, or any other man in their lives. Women were becoming more independent and able to run their own lives. Those women who were attending college often would finish their education and go out and find a job. This was a big change because the women would concentrate on their studies and getting a job before getting a husband and starting a family as they did before.
As the 1920s approached women began wearing their hair shorter, and smaller pieces of clothing. These women called flappers wanted to live the way that the young men of their time were. These women were also more rapidly entering the workforce as the men were off to war. As the jobs opened, someone had to step up and work and with the men gone the women were the next that were capable to do so. Women were becoming a larger part of the Jazz movement, as this was happening their clothing got smaller. Some people said these women “parked their corsets” when they would go out dancing, as they were not easy to move around it.

Where did all those romantic fellas go? With all that can be, all that is within us, romance lives forever! So why not take advantage of it. In the early 1900s many social conditions were changing and the idea of equality became something that women were interested in. This all began the women’s suffrage movement. Women’s suffrage refers to the economic and political reform movement aimed at extending women’s the rights to vote. By this time, more women were receiving education. Women also began to participate in reform movements and take increased interest in politics. Women and men began to question why women were not also allowed to vote. Women’s right to vote was achieved gradually, and started out only at state and local levels of government. Finally in 1920 the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which stated: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” This made the Presidential election of November 1920 the first occasion on which women in all states were allowed to exercise their right to vote. Overall the women’s suffrage movement was a very important part of history in this country, otherwise we would most definitely not be any where near where we are now.
Several factors have contributed to the fact that more than two times the number of working women are in the United States since about a century ago. Some of the technological innovations such as washing machines and dishwashers have allowed them to not worry so much about the time-consuming tasks necessary to managing the home environment. This is one way that the women showed they could be useful for more than just being housekeepers. Medical advances have shortened the amount of time spent caring for sick children, so the women were not needed to stay home for them as well. The rise in single-parent families and the increasing need for dual-income households to maintain reasonable living standards have made working outside of the home less of a choice than a necessity for most women.

The Term Paper on Scottish Women Family Scotland Vote
Perhaps the area that has changed the most for Scottish women in the last century is the family and the home. In the first half of the century the norm was for the woman of the house to 'service' the male breadwinners within the home and family and to reproduce as their primary roles in life. This included many tasks including preparing meals for the whole family, looking after the family budget ( ...
