“You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.” Exactly how important is family? Can you live without a friend? In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor the Logan family were always there for each other when they were in trouble. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry takes place in the state of Mississippi during the 30’s. In the book the Logan family goes through many tough challenges, mostly based on the issue of racism. Even though they were treated unfairly by whites, in the book whenever they are in trouble one of their family or friend would help them out. Because the story took place in Mississippi, a southern state racism is especially bad, but no matter what the author throws at them, they always make it through. It doesn’t matter what kinds of trouble you’re in your friends and family will be there to help you out, and that is why family and friends are so important.
The help between brothers and sister is very important in the Logan family. For example Stacey knew that if Cassie talked back to the white man she would have gotten herself in tons of trouble. Due to that reason Stacey grabbed Cassie’s arm and explained that standing up to the owner is not a good idea in the Wallace store, since Cassie did not know about the fact that whites always go before blacks. Even after everything Stacey had done Cassie did not listen and gotten into tons of trouble by the store owner and Lillian Jean’s father. Even at that point Stacey did not give up on Cassie and kept telling her the right thing to say and do so she doesn’t get into more trouble. “As we passed one of the counters, I spied Mr. Barnett wrapping an order of pork chops for a white girl. Adults were one thing; I could almost understand that. They ruled things and there was nothing that could be done about them. But some kid who was no bigger than me was something else again.” (P. 110), even though this quote reminded Cassie the unfairness she knew that she should not speak out again after what happened last time and what Stacey had told her.
The Essay on Night Men Cassie Whites White
1930 s Mississippi was a harsh place for black people. Slavery had finished but white people still treated black people like slaves. Mildred Taylor wrote of how she learnt to grow and understand more about injustice. Cassie, the main character tells us what it was like to be living at that time in America. In the essay I will discuss about how blacks got ignored in shops and the unjust education ...
Beside Siblings, Parents and other adults are a major area of importance in the story. After the kids got home they found their uncle at their house for a winter visit. After Uncle Hammer learned what happened to Cassie he got his gun and risked his own life to stand up for Cassie. “There might be another way, Hammer…Wait for David. Talk to him.” (p. 138).
Mama is pleading uncle Hammer, because what he is about to do is dangerous and many could die. Even knowing this He still wanted to stand up for Cassie. Another example why friends and family is important in the book is when Papa, Stacey, and Mr. Morrison were attacked by the Wallace’s. Papa tried to defend Stacey, and told him to keep the horse steady. Then he got hurt, because the horse freaked out, but if Mr. Morrison wasn’t here Papa would have been killed. Even though Mr. Morrison isn’t a part of the Logan family, he tried his best to help, and defend it. Mr. Morrison kept the Wallace’s away from the injured papa and Stacey, while defeating the Wallace’s.
Lastly having a trustworthy friend is important too. For example like TJ said “Friends gotta trust each other, Stacey, ‘cause ain’t nothin’ like a true friend.” (p.77) Even though TJ was not the most trust worthy person in the book, what he said is important. One of Logan kid’s most trustworthy friend is Jeremy. Even though he is white, he still wanted to be their friend. Later on in the book he helped to pour out the fire papa set later on in the book. Also Cassie became friends with Lillian Jean for a short while, even though the friendship did not last long it showed that black and whites could be friends.
The reason why family and friends are important is because they help you and guide you in life. Even though you might go through tough times, they will all ways be there to help you. You’re Siblings, your parents, uncles, and friends. Just like Taylor showed the readers in this book. That is why friends and family is so important.
