In this essay I will be commenting and comparing on how strong feelings in Romeo and Juliet, The willing Mistress by Aphra Behn, my pretty rose tree by William Blake and first love by John Clare and there effects are made interesting. Strong feelings are used in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ throughout the play. The emotions we see have strong variation but the two main emotions that a displayed are love and hate. Hate is only seen in the form of hatred between the two houses; “a montague…their oldest enemy” whereas love is seen between family, romantically and sexually. Strong emotions are very important in the play because the whole plot is given away in the prologue, and people would become uninterested as they already know what will happen. By portraying deep emotion the reader is keen to read on.
The first significant instance of strong feelings in Romeo and Juliet is in act 1 scene 5. In this scene Romeo and Juliet meet. Note that in spite of its title, this play has very few scenes in which both lovers are present (one being this scene and another being the balcony scene in act 2 scene 2).
In this scene there is both hatred and love as Romeo falls in love at first sight and the fiery Tybalt is enraged by the presence of Romeo at a Capulet reunion. “O she doth teach the torches to burn bright” is a quote of strong positive emotion. As soon as Romeo catches sight of Juliet he immediately forgets Rosaline and begins to comment on Juliet’s beauty. The specific word “teach” in the context tells the reader that she is the most radiant thing he has ever seen as he say that she “teaches the torches to turn bright”. In First Love written by John Clare, love at first sight is described as a physical impact unlike in Romeo and Juliet where there is more of a light hearted complimentary approach. For example in First Love there are quotes such as: “struck…face turned pale…my legs refused”. Clare describes a state of powerlessness, a loss of control over his own body, caused by the theft of his heart.
The Term Paper on Reno And Juliet Romeo Love Scene
1 Romeo and Juliet 2 William Shakespeare between 1591 and 15963 England 4 Romeo- Romeo is the most famous Montague there is. At first he loves Rosaline, but later falls in love with Juliet. Romeo is very fickle when it comes to love and falls quickly in and out of it. Juliet- Juliet is a Capulet and the love of Romeo. She is also the love interest of Paris but despises him very much. Juliet much ...
Romeo is wandering aimlessly around the Capulet backyard when someone appears on the balcony (one of the only times they are together).
In this passage Shakespeare is demonstrating how love has made Romeo blind and irrational. “What light through yonder window breaks” and he then answers his own question “it is the East and Juliet is the sun”. Shakespeare uses the word “sun” to signify the strong feelings Romeo has for Juliet, specifically her radiance. From this you can infer that Romeos irrational behaviour when with, and around Juliet will ultimately lead to his demise. Shakespeare uses this passage to put warning signs and to alert the audience that Romeo is irrational when in awe of Juliet. Shakespeare uses specific language to create a sense of possible future foreboding to entice the audience and to make them read on.
Shakespeare then uses Juliet to show how powerful love can be and to show how passionate Juliet is about Romeo. After Romeo had finished idolising Juliet, she begins to talk to herself without realising Romeo is there, “o Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo”. This quote is often misinterpreted to “Romeo, Romeo where are you Romeo” when its actual meaning is “why are you a Montague”. Shakespeare uses this quote to bring an aspect of the real world back into the fantasy of their strong love and sexual desires. This play was set in times where family honour was massively important and this relationship causes the two to turn their back upon their families. Shakespeare aims to spark feelings of sympathy in the audience as he points out how true love is almost cursed and forbidden in this situation and how this cannot end well for either Romeo and Juliet. In the Willing Mistress by Aphra Behn there is also an illicit love illustrated by several quotes, “Shade us…betray’d us… secur’d from human eyes”. Like in Romeo and Juliet love in the context is forbidden and frown upon yet cannot be stopped or controlled.
The Essay on Romeo Juliet Families Love Today
The Prologue of Romeo and Juliet reveals the entire story in a single page. The prologue raises the questions (1) To whom do the events occur? and (2) What are the details of the story? However, the plot itself is described within that first page. The two families are very rich and powerful but Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, are sworn enemies because of an ancient feud between their ...
Later in act 2 scene 2 Shakespeare shows how love makes Juliet act irrationally as she proposes to him by saying “if that thy bent of love be honourable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow”. This quote not only shows that she is almost living in a fantasy but how her character has developed from the shy conservative young lady in act 1 scene 5 who strictly obeys her mother, to a forthcoming irrational woman made blind by love. Shakespeare uses this proposal to show how consumed they both are by true love but also how they are rushing into a rash judgement that cannot end well. It is clear for all to see that Juliet’s sexual desire is growing just like the woman in the Willing Mistress who is by no means a passive recipient of the man’s advances; she’s very much an active participant in the seduction. “Willing to receive” is a quote taken from the Willing Mistress that signifies the sexual desire within the man but also how the woman is willing to provide.
Just before Juliet proposes to Romeo she shows her cautious side once again. Shakespeare uses the quote “I have no joy of this contract tonight” to again reiterate how shy and retiring Juliet is. The word “contract” shows that she feels that they have committed themselves to one another, but the contract has been made in a way that was seen as dangerous in society at the time. Before such a commitment is made a person should think things over, the contract between Romeo and Juliet is the opposite-rash, unadvised and sudden. Because everything has happened so quickly Juliet is afraid that the joy which has come as suddenly as lightening may disappear just as suddenly. This is effective playwriting from Shakespeare as it creates a sense of foreboding and strong feelings of love but also caution which makes the plot very interesting. This is why when a few lines later she proposes there is a strong sense of shock and character development. Caution is shown in the pretty rose tree written by William Blake when he avoids temptation, unlike Juliet. In the poem the man is offered a flower, “such a flower that may never bore”, the word flower in the context means a beautiful woman and the fact that it is a flower that “may never bore” suggests it’s a rare, once in a lifetime chance. However the man chooses to resist and not follow his desire. He says he has a “rose tree” meaning he already has a girl/wife who is long lasting and who he has nurtured over time. However when he gets home his “rose tree” is bitter and jealous. This is where the real difference lies between the poem and Romeo and Juliet, the love is a jealous negative love but is full of desire in the poem but in the play it is a positive romantic and also full of desire type of love.
The Essay on Fate On Juliet In William Shakespeares Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, is one of the greatest love stories of all time. The play was written around 1595, but the story has proven to be timeless. The play is a story of forbidden love that is resolved in two tragic deaths. Romeo and Juliet come from feuding families, but they defy the feud and fall in love. Many events take place during the five short days that they share ...
Shakespeare also in act 2 scene 2 uses the god of love, Cupid to show how deeply in love Romeo is. Juliet asks a practical question “by whose direction found’st thou out this place?” To which Romeo has a passionate answer “by love, who first did prompt me to inquire…he lent me counsel and I lent him eyes”. This means that it was cupid who told Romeo where to find Juliet and in return for cupid’s good advice Romeo lent him his eyes. From this quote you can infer that Romeo is prepared to sacrifice anything to be with Juliet. This is effective playwriting by Shakespeare because it again highlights the strong love and emotion behind two innocent people who are caught up in the middle of a family feud. Considering they both lose their lives, the tragedy is not that they both die but that they fall passionately in love which consequently costs them their lives.
Unlike in Romeo and Juliet, none of the three poems end in tragedy to such an extent. The Willing Mistress is the only one that ends positively however is similar to Romeo and Juliet due to the sexual desires of the man and the woman just like the sexual desires of Romeo and Juliet. It is also an illicit love and is forbidden just like the love seen between members of two feuding families. In First love by John Clare a different approach is taken. Rather than there being mental impacts like there is in Romeo and Juliet, John Clare decides to focus on physical impacts. What is similar between Romeo and Juliet and first love is that the “first love” in each situation reacts positively. In the last poem my pretty rose tree, it ends negatively just like in Romeo and Juliet. However the love is bitter and jealous and there is no relationship. So to conclude strong feelings and there effects are made interesting in Romeo and Juliet and the other 3 poems but in different contexts. In each one there are strong feelings of love and sexual desire but also hate making the effects and results enticing and interesting to read.
The Essay on Superficial Love Romeo Juliet Person
In William Shakespeare's romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, the two main characters are madly infatuated with each other, but they are not truly in love. There are several differences between true love and infatuation. First, true love takes time to develop and cannot happen at "first-sight." People who are truly in love with each other have had time to learn everything about the other person and ...
