Everyone has blamed someone in their life, in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, someone is responsible for the death of the two lovers. Out of all the characters involved in Romeo’s and Juliet’s death, the “holy” man Friar Lawrence is ironically the most responsible. For someone whose job is to serve be close to god, he causes the most harm. Friar Lawrence’s Mistakes lead up to great destruction. He is willing to do bad thing for a good cause. One example of this is, he agreed to marry the two lovers the Friar says, “This alliance may so happy prove/ to turn your households rancor pure love” (ROM ll IV 91-92) This shows that Friar had a slight hope of their marriage possibly working and the two families stop fighting. Therefore, he decides to marry the two lovers. However, as time moves on, the Friar lets on that he has regrets about the marriage. The Friar feels that “Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.” (ROM II VI 15) Because things start to get really fast with Romeo’s and Juliet’s relationship and friar starts to get second thoughts, Like i said if things didn’t go so fast Romeo and Juliet would not have killed themselves over “stupid” love.
The Friar is not very observant because he keeps causing destruction and still \ makes mistakes. Friar John to deliver a letter to Romeo that was supposed to inform him of Juliet’s death plan. Friar Lawrence is an expert in the use of seemingly mystical potions and herbs, so he insists that Juliet would use this potion/remedy for her death plan. “If rather than to marry Paris/ I’ll give thee remedy” (ROM VI l 71-72) She drinks this to fall into a coma and pretend to be dead. Romeo, because of friars mistake kills himself because he sees Juliet’s dead body,”O my love, my wife! Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath”(ROM v lll 80-81) After this Romeo gives up and drinks the poison, kisses Juliet’s lips then drink the poison again as you can see that miscommunication mistake was the friars fault All though you may think friar was a good guy and was just trying to help Romeo and Juliet with their love life he knew about the destruction he was causing and still kept helping them with their relationship. Friar Lawrence thinks they can run away and live together in mantua. Hence from Verona art thou banished. Be patient, for the world is broad and wide.” (ROM lll lll 15) Also, he sees what happened because of this “And for that offence Immediately we do exile him hence” (ROM lll I l) he sees that Romeo got banished. In The final analysis you can see, there are three good reasons why Friar Lawrence is to blame for Romeo’s and Juliet’s death. The first being he Agrees to marry them and rushing their wedding .Second is giving Juliet the potion to make her death plan Being scared of being banished he does not want to get caught and makes this outrageous plan. And third being that he keeps helping them even though he sees the destruction being caused from it like Romeo being banished and even death of Tybalt and Mercutio. As you can see Friar Lawrence is clearly the one to blame for Romeo’s and Juliet’s death.
