We almost have it made!” Horse and rider were going at breakneck speed through the night. Yet the gang was inching up on him. Around the curve in the woods and down the long dirt lane to the ranch house he flew. Once at the house, he grabbed an overhang and swung himself up on the roof. There he would make his stand.
He had been on the roof many times before and knew that he was more sure-footed than this ruthless gang would be that was coming after him. Pulling his six-gun, he dropped four of the men as they approached, but two of them got by him and jumped on the roof in front of him. They looked big and mean. The cowboy was not able to make out their faces in the dark, but he sure could feel their hot breath.
Throwing his gun to the side, he decided that it was time to use his fist. As the big one on the right made an advance at him, a lightening punch stopped the big ole guy in his tracks. Another, then another sent him reeling aside and stumbling. A karate kick to the head would have sent him flying off to the side, but fortunately he ducked quickly.
1 Goodall 2 The other hombre had sneaked up behind and tried to bash him with a two-by-four, and if he had not caught sight of it out of the corner of his eye, it would have been curtains for him. Turning swiftly, he gave a karate kick to the stomach and as the gang leader bent over, he gave him a rabbit punch, which dropped the ole fellow to his knees. He was about to throw him over the edge when a piercing ringing sounded. Sleepily feeling around, the clock was found on the floor, along with parts of his lamp and things from the nightstand that was beside his bed. Amid the tangled sheets and blankets, he got up to turn off the alarm.
