Throughout ‘The Endless Steppe’, Esther and her family experience racism. Before Esther and her family were sent to Siberia, she lived a good and happy life; she loved school and loved the order of her life. One day that all changed and the Rudomin family were ordered to pack their bags in less then ten minutes and were forced onto a truck which took them to a cattle train. The cattle trains were small, hot and stinking from the animals before.
The toilet was just one small hole and there was limited food and water. This train was going to be their home for a number of hours and days. The only reason why the Rudomin family were on this train was because they had a Jewish religion. While they were on the train the peasants were eating cheese and ham and Esther was there dying for food. One of the peasants offered her a piece but Esther’s mum shook her head. Once a day a solider would bring a pail of water and a pail of soup.
The soup did not taste like soup nor look like it, but everyone still ate it because it was the only thing to eat and everyone was so hungry. Esther and her family would be at Siberia for 5 years so they kept wondering what it would be like. After a long journey on the hot and stinking train. The train stopped and they were finally at Siberia. As the years went on Esther went to school, but she didn’t have many friends because of her religion and was made to live with it.
She had to work very hard to earn food and goods for her family. One day there was a declamation contest and Esther was very excited she entered it and was going to be reciting a poem; but everything goes wrong. The teacher who is holding the contest doesn’t like her also because of her religion. Esther was so excited about performing that she forgot about putting on shoes. When she got to the school where it was being held, the teacher saw Esther without any shoes and told her that she could only recite the poem if she had shoes on. Esther so badly wanted to recite it so she ran all the way back home and got her mums good slippers and wrapped some string or anything she could find to keep them from slipping off her feet.

When she got back to the school, she was so tired from running so much that she didn’t want to perform, but she did in the end.
