Extract From web > In 1871 on the 26 th of January the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed at the Pall Mall Restaurant. Since then the RFU has been working for the game of Rugby. It is the governing body for England. It has a membership of around 2000 clubs, 27 counties, the armed forces and Oxford and Cambridge universities. Every year over 200, 000 games are played under the backing of the RFU and the union also has a financial commitment to 8, 000 mini rugby sides allocated around the country. There are also around 3, 000 schools affiliated to the England rugby schools union.

The RFU are the founders of the Five Nations Cup which is now known as the Six Nations with the recent joining of Italy.
