Running head: WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 4 Written Assignment 4 August 29, 2009 Written Assignment 4 Question 1 Caffeine Caffeinism is very dangerous, as caffeine is a common psychoactive stimulant that is consumed in large quantities by society. The risks associated with caffeine consumption are quite serious: caffeine causes addiction as the body becomes increasingly dependent on high dosages of caffeine; it increases the feeling of anxiety, can lead to a number of stomach discomforts, irritability, sleeplessness, and even more severe reactions. During pregnancy caffeine should be limited, as it may cause serious effects on child. It can be very difficult to decrease caffeine intake or stop consumption. Common symptoms of caffeine withdrawal are terrible cravings and muscle twitching. Taking into consideration seriousness of negative symptoms, potential risks and side effects, the FDA is justified in establishing some sort of control and/or regulatory policy with regard to products containing caffeine. For example, FDA regulates caffeine content in “sodas and colas” (a limit of 65mg of caffeine per 12 liquid ounce in beverages.) Children should also be restricted from caffeine use due to negative effects on health and due to the fact that caffeine dependency develops faster in children than in adults.
This should be the matter for government involvement and parental guidance, as cumulative efforts will make it easier to prevent caffeine dependency in children. I rarely drink coffee, so my personal caffeine intake is about 1 cup of espresso/day (about 40 mg/cup).

When I drink more than 3-4 cups/day I experience increased alertness, insomnia, dizziness, headaches and nervousness. These changes in the mood and behavior coincide with those reported in my textbook readings. Taking into consideration negative impact massive doses of caffeine cause on health, it is recommended to drink maximum – 3 8oz/230ml cups of coffee per day (Weinberg & Bealer, 2001), which is total about 250 milligrams of caffeine as it has no apparent health risk.
