Criminals try to target people they think don’t have any protection. Criminals don’t care what happens to you, and they don’t think about what is going to happen in the future to them; they just think they are going to get away with whatever they do. Marion P. Hammer, executive director of Unified Sportsmen of Florida said: “No one knows what is in the twisted mind of a violent criminal. You can’t expect a victim to wait before taking action to protect herself and say: ‘Excuse me, Mr. Criminal, did you drag me into this alley to rape and kill me or do you just want to beat me up and steal my purse?” (NRA-ILA).
This is not what happens in the real world; criminals will not wait for you to ask questions; they just do what they came to do and leave. Safety is an essential element in people’s lives, and if gun control is too strict, then people will not be able to defend themselves or their homes as fast as they might need to.
There are laws out there that give people the right to protect themselves. The “Castle Doctrine” laws in Florida are as follows: One: It establishes, in law, the presumption that a criminal who forcibly enters or intrudes into your home or occupied vehicle is there to cause death or great bodily harm, so the occupant may use force, including deadly force, against that person. Two: It removes the “duty to retreat” if you are attacked in any place you have a right to be. You no longer have to turn your back on a criminal and try to run when attacked. Instead, you may stand your ground and fight back, meeting force with force, including deadly force, if you reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to yourself or others.

Owning a gun can give the owner a sense of security that allows him to concentrate on other things. Owning a gun can make people live more responsible lives. Having a gun in your possession or in your household means you have to change your attitudes and your habits in order to control your natural impulses and carelessness in handling a lethal weapon. It also increases both power and responsibility, thus improving the character of the gun owner. Most gun owners know that educating yourself about guns is an important step in being a responsible gun owner.
The NRA (National Rifle Association) has gun safety rules that most people follow to keep them safe. The following are the gun safety rules. “Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.” This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means the gun is pointed, even if it were to go off, it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances. “Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.” When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger. “Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use (NRA).”
In addition to the basic rules, the NRA offers more detailed safety instructions as well. Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber, leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does. Know your target and what is beyond. Know how to use the gun safely. Be sure the gun is safe to operate. Use only the correct ammunition for your gun. Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate. Never use alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription or other drugs before or while shooting. Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons.

The NRA does give training courses on many different aspects dealing with gun safety. If more Americans went through gun safety courses, then that would be a start for true gun control. People have the right to protect themselves when and where ever they need to because criminals don’t care where you are they will just come to you. This is why people have guns. Gun control advocates/lobbyists are just over doing themselves. Yes, there should be restrictions on owning guns. People should get gun safety education if they have one or plan to get one. This will help keep people safe and should reduce the number of household accidents with guns.
