How would you feel if you couldn’t marry someone you loved? Same-sex marriage should be legal. Some people think that gay marriage shouldn’t be legal at all because of their religion or just because they don’t like gays. Religion shouldn’t be part of this at all because everyone has different religious views, and one person’s views are not going to be the same as the next. Everyone should be able to love who they want to love and not be judged. I think it shouldn’t matter if you’re gay or not they should be allowed to marry whomever.
Religious beliefs shouldn’t determine whether or not same-sex marriage should be legal. There is many different beliefs out there and people shouldn’t have a say who people can and can’t marry. Eleven states have already legalized gay marriage: Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Washington, DC, New York, Iowa,California, Maine, Washington state, and Maryland. Ten countries have legalized same-sex marriage: South Africa, Belgium, Sweden, Canada, Spain, Norway, and Portugal.
Though gay marriage wasn’t legal until the 2000s some t.v. shows have featured gay and lesbian weddings. Sitcom Roseanne featured a gay marriage in 1995 while Friends featured a lesbian wedding in 1996. Many celebrates, gay and straight, are wide supporters of legalizing same-sex marriage. More than 150 celebrities support same-sex marriage including President Obama. Ellen, a popular daytime talk show host, has made history when she came out both in real life and on her sitcom, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. When it comes to helping the public to better understand and accept same-sex couples, she may have made an even greater impact through her daytime talk show.

Some People are against same-sex marriage because of their religion. They think it would destroy the institution of marriage. Others think that when its legalized polygamy will follow. They will also be able to adopt. People feel that a healthy family should have a mother and a father and not just two same-sex parents. It would also require schools to teach tolerance. The Religious Right’s vision of millions of lesbians and gay Americans converting to heterosexuality and marrying members of the opposite sex would have to be written off entirely in order to produce any economic benefit based on denying same-sex couples the right to marry.
Any such benefit would be small-scale anyway. If 4% of the U.S. population identifies as lesbian or gay and half of lesbians and gay men get married, then that’s only a 2% increase in the national marriage rate. That won’t make or break Social Security. Same-sex marriage should be legalized in all states. Many people support same-sex couples so why wouldn’t they be able to get married. Those who support same-sex marriage often argue that love is grounds enough for marriage, regardless of sexual orientation. The conflict over same-sex marriage is not a simple one.
