It’s all about becoming a social being, which happens through interactions between the child and those around him. For example; A child from a wealthy background, who does not, get enough attention from his parents, can seek attention through many things, one key factor being crying. A child can cry all day locked up in his room, weeping for hours but trying to hide himself from people around him, trying to stay unnoticed, which symbolizes that the child is in deep pain either emotionally or physically. Then you have another child, who has been rejected by his parents, from a proposal to go to his friend’s house.
The child does not know what to do, and is desperate to go, has many options but chooses the easiest one; whining. The child keeps on asking the parent but the answer remains negative. Now the child will try to test his parent’s patience and might start to cry. Eventually the parent will get fed up with the child crying, and therefore not want to see him in pain, so he will reconsider the proposal, and give the child a positive answer, he will let him go. Now the child has learnt where and what his parent’s weak point is and he will keep using the same strategy to get somewhere. This is a symbolic action, now the child knows that by crying he symbolizes to the parent, some emotional pain, and crying would just be another way of asking his parent, in an abstract way, that, yes, you should allow me to go.
