Schizophrenia is a physical disease of the brain. It was first name “Dementia Praecox” which means “early dementia.” It is the disabling of the major mental illnesses. A person could suffer one disorder or more than on with different causes. A person may exhibit different kinds of behavior at different times. Schizophrenia actually begins appearing in the late teens and 20’s. Striking mostly in men between the ages of 15 and 24 years old, and women between the ages of 25 to 34 years old. Children that are over the age of 5 years old can also develop schizophrenia. Almost 1% of the population develops the illness.
Schizophrenia has different kinds of symptoms. One of them is the positive symptom. Individuals with positive symptoms may experience hallucinations. It is when they sense things that do not really exist. Hearing voices that other people don’t hear is the most common type of hallucination in schizophrenia. Such voices may describe the patient’s activities, carry on conversation, and tell the person what to do, or lead them to danger.
Sometimes the voices are complimentary, reassuring, and neutral. They also see objects or people that are not really there or experience unusual feeling on or in his or her body. Another symptom are the strange and false beliefs which what they call delusions. A belief that is not subject to reason or not part of the person’s culture. Sometimes they are quite bizarre.
