Ecology

Ethics
An area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior: a branch of philosophy dealing with what is morally right or wrong (“Merriam-Webster”, 2014).
Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)
An organism whose genome has been altered in order to favor the expression of desired physiological traits or the output of desired biological products (Merriam-Webster, 2014).
Renewable energy
Any energy resource that is naturally regenerated over a short time scale and derived directly from the sun (such as thermal, photochemical, and photoelectric), indirectly from the sun (such as wind, hydropower, and photosynthetic energy stored in biomass), or from other natural movements and mechanisms of the environment (such as geothermal and tidal energy).
Renewable energy does not include energy resources derived from fossil fuels, waste products from fossil sources, or waste products from inorganic sources (Texas Renewable Energy, 2014).

Hedonism
The belief that pleasure or happiness is the most important goal in life (Merriam-Webster, 2014).
Inherent value
Existing in someone or something as a permanent and inseparable element, quality, or attribute (Dictionary.com, 2014).
Materialism
A way of thinking that gives too much importance to material possessions rather than to spiritual or intellectual things (Merriam-Webster, 2014).
Metaphysical ecology
Is the study of the human organism and the relationship between this human state of being with the internal and external environments (“Metaphysical Ecology”,).
Minimalism
A style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity (Merriam-Webster, 2014).
Ethical extensionism
Is an argument in environmental ethics that moral standing ought to be extended to things (animals, plants, species, the earth) that traditionally are not thought of as having moral standing (“Ethical Extensionism”, 2012).
Pluralism
The belief that people of different social classes, religions, races, etc., should live together in a society (Merriam-Webster, 2014).

One growing environmental issue my local community faces is unsustainability. People are leading a less sustainable lifestyle to live comfortably. Problem is that the natural resources such as water are being depleted quickly. These people are Anthropocentrism and Materialistic in how they way the live and act. Peoples whose thoughts lean toward Anthropocentrism believe they need to use up all available equity of land causing destruction of surrounding ecosystems in our area. The cause ecological destruction through overpopulation causing the extinction of many important species. Humans are more involved in their personal assets then in the environment itself. Materialism is their drive to take over. They do not concern themselves with environmental issues our communities and others are facing. Natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate. If this continues there will be none left for future generations to come.

It is important that people see the damages they are causing, and make the changes to lead a green lifestyle. Minimalism is a thought all people should possess. This technique will allow for more sustainable living. Biocentrism is important because all living things have value in the environment. People in my community need to focus on the importance of our resources water is scarce in the desert, and it is important we preserve what is available to ensure it lasts for decades to come. Pollution is another major environmental issue community’s face today. People feel that throwing a piece of paper on the ground would cause no harm they are wrong. Millions of people a year pollute the air, our waterways, and land ecosystems causing harm to many living species as well as damage to the environment. It takes only a second to discard trash in its proper receptacles.
The beliefs people possess vary from person to person a good educational program, laws, and regulations are a great place to start in resolving many environmental issues communities are facing. Teaching our children the importance of ecosystems, and the species living within the environment helps them to grow with a greater understanding of the value of all species on earth. We need to grow as a community and make changes for the better.
