Household Water Sealants My science experiment is about water sealants for paper boats. I got interested in the subject because I recently got interested in origami. As I was looking on the web on origami projects I came across an origami paper boat. Well, I decided to make it and then I was curious to see if it would float or sink. I placed the boat in a bucket of water and it did float and eventually it did sink. I told my friend about the boat and he told me that it would be great to use it in a science experiment.
Boats along with other things use water sealants so the water doesn’t sink I learned that sealers contain liquid polymers. Sealers can prevent rust, corrosion resistance, are waterproof, slipping, skidding, and many others. I was curious to see if it would work on paper boats. To make it more interesting I decided to use everyday household items to see if they would work as sealants. Question: What household item would be the best water sealant for paper boats? Hypothesis: I think lip balm would be the best sealant for paper boats. I think marker would be the worst sealant for paper boats.
The manipulated variables are the household items. The responding variable would be the time it takes for the boats to sink. Materials: o Five pieces of plain white paper o 13 cups of water o A bowl 5 in. high with a width of 14 in. o Avery Glue Stick o Blister Regular Lip Balm o Crayola Marker o Dove Deodorant o Clock Procedure: I first made the paper boats. This is the web site I used to make the boats: web Then I added 13 cups of water into the bowl.
The Essay on Interest in Rainwater
The article entitled “Interest in Rainwater Harvesting Grows in Colorado” written by Paul Day was about a proposal of Brad Lancaster, a rainwater virtuoso and initiator. His entire idea according to the news was that he wanted to use the rainwater for needs of the people and environment just like in Arizona and New Mexico. But the Executive Director of Colorado Waterwise, Paul Lander, prohibited ...
Next, I added the sealants on to the paper boats to where the paper would touch the water. I placed them in the bowl. I as well as family members observed the boats every 30-45 minutes to see if any of the boats sank. We recorded how many hours it took for each of the boats to sink. Results: My results are as follows. In my first trial deodorant sank last and marker sank first.
In my second trial deodorant again sank last and again marker sank first. However, in the third trial lip balm sank last but marker again sank first. Overall, in two of the trials deodorant sank last and in all three trials marker sank first. Graph: Table: Trial One Trial Two Trial Three Glue stick 2 1. 5 2 Lip balm 1.
5 2 3 Marker 0. 5 0. 5 0. 5 Deodorant 4 4.
5 2. 5 Paper 1 1 1 Conclusion: In conclusion, my hypothesis was partially right. Marker did prove to be the worst sealer for paper boats. However, it was deodorant that was the best sealer not lip balm. Deodorant proved to be the best sealer in two of the three trials. I believe lip balm was the best sealer in the third trial because I probably put the deodorant boat way before I put the lip balm boat in the water.
They weren’t put in at the same time, so I would think time had an affect. I don’t know why deodorant worked out to be the best. It could be that it is an anti-per spirant so it is supposed help you not sweat, but I really have no clue. What I learned most of the project is that I found it interesting that you could use everyday things as a sealer. It helped me look at science in a bigger perspective. Things all around us are part of science.
You could basically make a science experiment out of anything. I learned about the experiment by actually doing it I don’t think it could work any other way. I did learn that my hypothesis turned out to be wrong when I observed the ending results. It was only then during my process did I learn anything. I’m not really quite sure how this experiment fits into my daily activities.
I guess if I ever wanted to use my own sealer on something I could look at the components that would be the best use. This is very important because if I ever had my own boat and put my own sealer on it and used components that were in let’s say in the marker my boat would probably sink. This experiment help you discover the best components to use in a sealer. If I could do it again I would change the following: I would make sure I put the boats in at the same time, try to use the same amount of each sealer, and one sealer that I didn’t try was nail polish so I would like to see the results with that. Process Skills Learned: I observed the boats sinking and observed the time for each of the boats to sink. I learned by making these observations what household item would be the best and worst sealer to use for paper boats, which the best sealer was deodorant and the worst was marker.
The Essay on Boat Island Ralph Officers
The 13 th Chapter The boat had the island with all the kids except the deceased. On the boat ride home there was very little conversation on the boat except for the officers repeating the same question over and over again; "weren't there more of you kids, what happened to the rest of you." Everybody was rather silent and didn't really cooperate with the superiors. Ralph was still frightened by ...
The measurements I made were the measurement of the bowl and the amount of water I used in the bowl. These measurements didn’t tell me anything about the boats except that they could float. I also measured the time in hours in took for the boats to sink. This helped me to know what was the best and worst sealer. I classified my observations as being quantitative and qualitative.
My quantitative observations were seeing with eyes the boats sinking. I classified it as qualitative because I used one of my senses. My quantitative observation was measuring how many hours it took for the boats to sink in hours. I classified this as qualitative because in quantitative measurements they are measured in numbers. I made no inferences in my experiment. The predictions I made were that the lip balm was going to best sealer and the marker would be the worst sealer.
This helped me to know that I was well partially wrong deodorant turned out to be the best and marker was the worst.
