science fiction is a popular and interesting genre’s to read. It is a genre that helps childhood dreams of living in other worlds come to life, It is known as the literature of ideas because of the concept of imagination used in the stories e. g. time traveling, space travel, alien races, dystopias, utopias etc. It brings us to an imaginative world of the future helping us portray things we could never imagine of doing or seeing. It helps us picture the many consequences that creations of the future can bring us.
As Ray Bradbury quoted “I don’t try to describe the future. I try to prevent it” the quote shows that this author does not only write to create an image of the future, but he writes to show people what the outcomes of certain future inventions could bring, and to warn everyone of the possible chaos caused by future inventions. The author is saying that just because all inventions or creation, it does not mean that they always have a positive effect, and could also have a negative effect.
This is shown to be true in stories such as Sand Kings where a man mistreats alien pets, which in the start seem harmless but slowly form into a huge danger. The story of the Sand Kings is an example of authors trying to warn people about the possible out comes of the future. The plot of the story is how a man that collects exotic animals, stumbles across creatures called Sand kings. The Sand Kings are smart creatures, which can build, scavenge and fight. After a while the main character starts to get bored of the sand kings and decides to starve them. This turns out to be a bad decision as later on in the story the Sand Kings get out and start to grow.
The character’s mistreatment to the Sand Kings makes them violent, killing many people. This shows that the writer is trying to portray an image of a future where there are exotic pets for sale and how having strange creatures could cause many problems in the future. This story relates to the quote as in the quote the author is saying the stories are to prevent the future, in this case the sand kings are a type of pet you can buy in the future and the outcomes of mistreating them caused a large consequence and problems.
It helps us understand the consequences of animal cruelty and the consequences of the mistreatment. This story not only shows us of the consequences of the mistreatment of animals but also the consequences of a person personality. In the book the character’s bad personality also contributes to the final problem, he is portrayed as a stuck up, self centered guy, because of his personality it made him make the self centered decision of starving the sand kings for his own amusement of watching the sand kings starve.

In this story it shows that the smallest changes in the past may cause a huge change in the future.
The writer is trying to show that time travel is not a good thing as you have to be really careful about your environment as the smallest changes could effect the present time greatly. He is trying to warn us of the possible threats, which could happen with the creation of time travel, as it could be used as a negative invention to try to change certain events from happening in the future changing the course of history.
